MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A powerful typhoon left at least 19 people dead, knocked down power and communications in entire provinces and wrought widespread destruction mostly in the central Philippines, officials said Saturday. A governor said her island province has been “leveled to the ground.”

Typhoon Rai blew away Friday night into the South China Sea after rampaging through southern and central island provinces, where more than 300,000 people in its path were evacuated to safety in advance in a pre-emptive move officials say may have saved a lot of lives.

At its strongest, Rai packed sustained winds of 195 kilometers (121 miles) per hour and gusts of up to 270 kph (168 mph), one of the most powerful in recent years to hit the disaster-prone Southeast Asian archipelago....

Went through a really bad typhoon on Okinawa there as a dependent in the late 50s, early 60s (hard to recall now) and more a decade later in the late 60s and early 70.....

Lived in a completely poured concrete house (roof and walls) and the wind blew so hard the brass door flanges on the solid core front door actually howled like a banshee with the vibration. The other typhoons when I was there in the military were strong and I had to go in and work comms on a 4/4 on/off basis at work in the air terminal.....

“many homes roofless”

Including my girlfriend’s family’s. Still can’t get a hold of them. Roofless message was before power went down.

The Philippine article I read said that wind gusts were clocked well into Cat V territory at one point.

We got the rain, but not the wind, where I live. The internet is just now coming back.

Cebu got hit pretty hard. I am several hundred miles south of Cebu City. Today is the first day we have seen the sun in about 5 Days. It knocked out cell phone service and internet service for about 36 hours. I hate typhoons and earthquakes. I hope you can find the family.

Brother-in-law and his family are there, in Western Leyte. The town is Bato. Can’t get any word to or from him. Doesn’t sound good. I’ve seen some estimates that up to 10,000 have been killed. OTOH, I’ve found one prediction that appeared 12 hours before landfall that said Bato would get off light, with winds topping out at 40mph. Still, prayers are up for all the people who have really been clobbered by this thing.

Isn’t this backwards. We should be pinging you wondering if you still have a roof overhead??? Among other things. Apparently you and your phone are still with us.

The Philippine article you read said that wind gusts were clocked well into Cat V territory at one point?

AP probably is super exaggerated, "sustained winds of 195 kilometers (121 miles) per hour and gusts of up to 270 kph (168 mph)?"

PhilStar says,

The typhoon Odette has further intensified with maximum sustained winds of 165 kilometers per hour near the center, gustiness of up to 205 kph, and a central pressure of 945 hectoPascals.

Odette is heading westward at 25 kph and is forecast to maintain its strength while moving over the West Philippine Sea.

165 KPH not 165 MPH!

That's not cyclone yet.

Thanks for your concern bro. The typhoon hit hundreds of miles to the north. We got rain, but not the wind. Cell phone and internet service were knocked out for about 36 hours. Cell service was back up in the morning, and internet is coming back as well. We didn’t get the brunt of it, yet our cell service and internet went down. I have no idea how Cebu is doing.

In the same storm that devastated Mayfield last week, I lost two more trees.

They were dead from the ash borers and were marked to be taken down anyway.

Other than scattered twigs and small limbs and branches down,
I came out ok.

I have seven youngish ash trees waiting for the borer. They have been seen on the East side of SD some 350 miles from me. Have you done anything in the way of prevention for yours?
