Sources: Cleveland Browns QB Case Keenum tests positive for COVID-19

BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns quarterback Case Keenum has tested positive for COVID-19, potentially leaving the team without its top two quarterbacks for Saturday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter and Kimberley Martin.

Starting quarterback Baker Mayfield already tested positive for the virus earlier this week and remains on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Nick Mullens, who was just added to the active roster Thursday, is now in line to start at quarterback for the Browns. Mullens started 16 games for the San Francisco 49ers from 2018 to '20, but has yet to throw a pass for the Browns.

Garrett said it was unusual that players weren't tested before entering the team's facility on Thursday, meaning those who were positive might have entered the building and increased the potential for spread.

"It almost seemed like we were just ignoring it instead of addressing the issue,'' he said. "We should go ahead and test and then allow in the building but not before you get results, and that is how it should be.

"The lack of testing that we have done all year I kind of feel like has led to this point. Only testing one time a week and guys doing their own thing on Monday and Tuesday with their time off, it was kind of a recipe for disaster.''

Schefter and Martin reported that four more Browns defenders, including safety Grant Delpit and cornerback A.J. Green, have tested positive, bringing the number in the protocols to about 20. The Browns already added safety Ronnie Harrison Jr. to the COVID-19 list Thursday.

Under the previous protocols, a vaccinated individual who tests positive for COVID-19 has to produce two negative tests 24 hours apart before being cleared to return. The new protocols relax that requirement and could enable teams such as the Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Rams and Washington Football Team to get some players back for this weekend’s games.

In creating the new return-to-play protocols, the NFL and NFLPA focused on a new metric that measures the viral load of a player, known as the “cycle threshold” (CT). In essence, the CT value can measure whether a player is still contagious, even if in some cases he would still test positive on a traditional test.

This protocol only applies to those who received boosters and were vaccinated with mRNA for their initial two doses. J+J doesn’t count.

It is astounding at the level of obfuscation media venues are going to be as nebulous as possible regarding one simple question, “Was the person vaccinated or not?” Period....very simple question but they (in this case ESPN and AP) dance all around it with ‘protocols’ and ‘NFL practices’ and such.

Was he, or was he not? Disgusting.

This fear porn is beyond annoying. Testing positive using a moderately accurate nose swab is a far cry from being sick or contagious especially when you have taken the clot-shots. Now since you have taken the shots, the only thing you need to fear is reduced immune system efficiency, blood clots, myrocarditis, and the very great possibility of a shortened life span (think years not decades). Of course none of these afflictions were on the table before you took the clot-shots ...

When the brown stained underwear play, it's always very, very ugly.

The only team with a color for a name is only one step above the team from DC that has no name.

The browns kept the name of the owner/founder/coach that founded them and then left and started the Bungles and the browns left and became the ravens and then were re-formed and still took that sad sack name.

The glory days of the browns ended with Jimmy Brown, over a half a century ago, and they ain't coming back, not with these two average QBs.

How come the Browns don’t have to change their name? POC should be offended if Redskins was offensive.

How come the Browns don't have to change their name?

Beats me, you'd think that the light brown skinned part negroes would be offended and would want the name changed to beige or puce or drab.

There are so many people 'of color' that claim to be black or african American that have less black genes than I do {my grandparents came from Sicily, a short swim from Africa and both had kinky hair}.

The QB from the chiefs is a 'brother' but has as much 'white genetic material' as do many other Americans.

It is cool to be 'black' today, and you can't be a racissssss if you are black {even if you are 100% pretender}, ax rachel dolezal.

As a Stiller fan [I know they stink}, watching the browns self flagellate when they thought this was their year, gives me a perverse heart warming.

I drove my dad to cleveland for a Stillers/browns game in the early 70s {before the Stiller Super Bowl Years} and had all four of the tires on my car slashed, and while it was over 50 years ago, I will never forget that act of browns's fans being brown's fans.
