Microsoft has blocked all default browser workarounds in Windows 10 and Windows 11

When Patch Tuesday rolls around, we can usually expect a series of Windows problems to be fixed (and perhaps to see some new ones introduced), as well as new features added. But Microsoft also uses such updates to take things away -- and this is precisely what has happened with the latest updates for Windows 10 and 11.

Microsoft, quite understandably, would like everyone to use its Edge browser, and has taken endless steps to ensure that it stays the default browser on as many computers as possible. With the latest operating system updates -- specifically the KB5008212 and KB5008215 updates -- the company has implemented a block on workarounds used by the likes of EdgeDeflector and Firefox to force links to open in a browser other than Edge.

Browser developers have played something of a game of cat and mouse with Microsoft, finding ways to prevent Edge from hijacking links. In various places within Windows, Microsoft has used the microsoft-edge:// protocol to force links -- such as those in Windows 11 widgets -- to open in Edge.

No idea why I can’t post links using iphone anymore on FR. On my laptop links are fine. It’s like apple is blocking html for some reason.

My 2009 Win-7 Pro x64 just keeps going and going, and doing what I tell it to do.

I hope you don't use it for anything more than playing Solitaire. You haven't had a security patch since January 14, 2020 unless you paid for the extended vulnerability service.

I’ll have to check that out. 20.1 is working fine for me but I don’t have a lot of software installed on it either. But thanks for the head’s up. I’ll see about getting it updated to 20.2 right now.

" I actually like the current version of Edge. At least it's based on the Chromium code, so it is reasonably compatible and runs fast. "

All modern browsers are inferior in the scope of customization that Firefox legacy (prior to ver. 59.02 ) enabled.

Of course, there is that security issue...

Along with up-to-date browsers like Vivaldi (you can hack it to get multiple tab rows ) and Firefox Quantum portable (so you can also use legacy Firefox and Waterfox classic (most FF legacy extns work) then I use two profiles of Firefox ESR 59, all having their specific general use *forums, shopping..) Thank God for such tools to be use for good.

Thanks for that tip. I dual boot Win10 and Linux Mint with Linux being the primary.

It’s so frustrating to boot into windoze after a time then have to wait for the slow process of updates.

If you know a trick to turn off all the windows and app sounds other than the one under “Sounds” that doesn’t work; please let me know.

Win 7 64bit.
Had run Chrome for a long time, and had profiles for other family with their own c Desktop icons.
Been running Brave for several months.
Launched one of the kid’s Profiles in Chrome, and meet with SSL errors trying to access the core Google features (GMail,Calendar, Drive, etc).

No option to proceed anyway, just pages not loading.

But, holding shift and spamming the Reload button would eventually get me there. NO CLUE what’s going on.

Virus scan.
Nothing.

ZERO issues using Brave. None.

I do; thank you kindly for asking.

I have Norton 360 Premium and MalwareBytes Premium, running far superior detection & protection, to anything MS ever put out.

I don’t know how to do dual/multi-boot computers. Wish I did, but I run Linux Mint v18.3 occasionally from a thumb drive.

It can be a challenge, no doubt about it. Waaaaay back in the mid 2000’s I multi-booted a PC with Windows 95, 98SE, 2000, Vista and Linux. THAT was a real trick! I think I impressed the instructor with that one, and all the O/S’s worked!

Sorry, sounds from my laptop PC have not been an issue for me. So I have no clue. I do not hear any annoying sounds, and the only sounds I hear are when I connect speakers into the laptops port and play music using Windows Media player.

Those are excellent anti-virus applications and I use MalwawareBytes myself, but those don't protect against the exploitation of a bunch of insecurities inherent in the operating system itself. There are about 2000 known unpatched security vulnerabilities in Win7 by this point and those are just the publicly disclosed ones.

I have to do tall that for my wife’s Win10 machine.

Huge PITA. Odd how Win7 does not have those issues. Maybe why they tried so hard to get people to downgrade?

I deleted Edge FRom my registry, and, so far, so good!

The VERY annoying Edge popups are leaving me alone!

I use CCleaner Browser, and like it very much!

Startpage - The world’s most private search engine @ https://www.startpage.com/ - is my go-to search engine.

ALL GOOD!

“And you can bet Apple is right behind them with the same business model.”

We went to the Moon with 4KB.

These days people flinch if their 8GB Chromebook needs to open another tab.

I will go out on a limb and say that install DVDs obliterated the need for programmers to even give a crap about compact code … not like when installing Word took a stack of 40 floppies and hardly anyone was sadistic enough to make it 80.
