Lawmakers working to modify measure passed by voters in 2016
Supporters of proposals to modify an animal welfare law approved by Massachusetts voters in 2016 warn the measure could cause a shortage of eggs on grocery store shelves if legislators fail to overcome disagreements before the end of the year.
Voters overwhelmingly approved the measure, Question 3, to impose new standards on the treatment of animals, including a requirement that hen enclosures have at least 1.5-square-feet of floor space per bird. That requirement is scheduled to take effect on Jan. 1, at which time sales of eggs laid by hens in smaller enclosures would be prohibited.

"That's not just eggs. It's egg products, as well," said Bob Beauregard, general manager of The Country Hen in Hubbardston. "So hard-cooked eggs, liquid eggs would all have to be removed from the shelf come Jan. 1 if the law does not change."
Brad Mitchell, head of the Massachusetts Farm Bureau, told NewsCenter 5 that there will likely be some egg shortages and price hikes as a result of the law. According to Mitchell, Massachusetts egg producers will not be able to fill the state's demand on their own because, on average, each resident eats one egg per day and each chicken lays one egg per day.

Thats fine. They can drive to another state to purchase eggs..at around 10 bucks a dozen.
NY, NH, CT, VT, ME and RI are going to have to put turnstiles in - this law also affects pork products.
Masshats are used to running the borders for menthol cigarettes, no deposit sodas, and cheaper booze.. now EGGS???

Pretty sure eggs are produced in most every state. I doubt this will affect me in MO. Same with Cali wanting meat birds being raised humanely. There are a LOT of chicken farms in AR, OK, MO. Cali grows veggies, nuts and grapes. MA doesn’t grow a whole lot due to the short season.

They would just drive North to 'Free' New Hampshire,
where the State motto is :" Live FREE or Die".
I imagine there will be a mass residential movement into New Hampshire,
even more so than there is already occurring.
They’re just doing whatever they can to keep people off balance and not relaxed.
California has regulations coming online that will require all pork, veal and chicken (meat and eggs) be produced under strictly “humane” conditions. Producers are rushing to have the regs’ implementation delayed and meanwhile are making no effort to redesign their facilities. Shortages are already being forecast.
Yet again, backyard chicken keeping nationwide would help with this. (sigh)
