They do that primarily because of Medicare and Medicaid plus those Blue Chip Health plans with which they don’t have prior price control agreements. Anyone who got a bill like that and had to pay it in cash and actually pays it is a complete fool.
I don’t think she did know or she wouldn’t have asked. Fortunately, nicer people stepped up and responded.
I retired recently and I am now signed up for COBRA insurance.
I have been looking at other insurance plans. Blue Cross as an example for Gold is $747 a month.
Cobra is $806 for the same insurance as I had with the past company for half the cost. I now have to pay full cost of the plan. It is good for 18 months and I should then be eligible for Medicare which I do not know much about.
I am still comparing what the bronze, silver, gold, platinum plans cover. There is also coverca for California and CaliforniaChoice, HealthMarkets, Health Net etc.
I want to know what I would pay for some illness and stay in a hospital. I am lucky that I am in good health and only need dental.
