Sales of the canned cooked meat Spam have hit a record high for the seventh year in a row, despite pandemic-related challenges.
That helped Hormel, the company that makes the iconic brand, deliver record sales of $3.5bn (£2.65bn) in the three months to the end of October.
The firm's boss said it will start work on expanding its range of Spam products next year.
Hormel's shares rose by almost 6% in New York on Thursday.
"The Spam brand delivered its seventh consecutive year of record growth," Hormel's chief executive Jim Snee said on a conference call with investors.
"We are also beginning work on another expansion for the Spam family of products scheduled to be operational in 2023," he added.
Hormel, which completed its takeover of the Planters peanut brand in June, saw sales rise by 19% to $11.4bn for the year as a whole.
That came even as the company was faced with supply chain issues during the coronavirus pandemic.
To help limit the impact of supply issues in the future Hormel said it has signed a new five-year contract for supplies of pork, the main ingredient in Spam.

That you are aware of...
I actually kinda like it. I always had canned meat when I was working, hiking, traveling.
Been eating it since I was 5 years old. I saw a can in my dad’s lunch box when he got home. I figured if my dad was going to eat it I would too. Same for sardines.
I repeat:
Lived in Korea for two years. Never saw or ate spam.
nothing wrong with sardines.
I don’t know where you live to have prices that high and I only buy when it’s on sale. But even at its normal price around around here of $4.00 per 12 ounce can that only equates to 33cents per ounce or $5.28 a pound which at times is a whole lot cheaper than what is in the butcher aisle lately.
Now that I see it in those terms, I think I will stock up on a few extra cans and some cans of diced white potatoes, add in some chopped onions and spices and it makes for some pretty good homemade breakfast hash in a pinch.
Sounds good except American cheese which is to cheese what margarine is to butter
I like thin crispy spam too.
Panini style sounds like a good idea
Being an epicurean as well like yourself I have a panini maker too
Made in Italy no less
No. Just. No.
I’ve always liked SPAM, but lately have found it to be too salty. I have found Bristol brand of cooked ham, sold at Dollar General to be more to my taste. Not the heavy smokey flavor one.
I still remember SPAM in cartoons and movies. One Bill Mauldin WW II cartoon shows Russians looking in an English-Russian translation guide trying to figure out what SPAM and MAZOLA Oil was.
The other was the movie ISLAND IN THE SKY with John Wayne, in which starved isolated survivors of an arctic plane crash gets a food drop. First thing they do is hunt through it to find the SPAM, and toss it as far away as they can. They had enough of it in WW II.
:)
Very important point. I do not use “processed cheese food.” At the store Kraft has. six or eight different configurations of processed cheese food. However they also still sell traditional American Cheese, though not at every store.
You just have to be careful which package you pick up. I agree that “Cheese food” is vile and I won’t eat it.
No
Online about three bucks a can
1800 calories per can
Chicken hot dogs if you look hard can be found for 79 to 89 cents a pack of six and 1100-1200 calories
Much cheaper bang for buck
Spam taste better if cooked right
I know this because I feed my two 140-150 pound Rottweilers a lot of hot dogs in their diet
They like them and it’s a lot of calories for the money
Cheaper than most dog food cereal bags some of which are nice like Origen but super pricey
Cheap dogs are their staple along with what we eat ....and some dynovite bars which I’m not sure are al that or not
They are both big and robust and shiney from all that chicken fat.....I noticed they’ve picked up some Yiddish
:)
Fried rice and Spam!
Last time I priced Spam the 12 oz can was the same price as the per pound price of ham. Now admittedly try buying a pound of ham. But it keeps well, is cheaper, and tastes better.
Well then, can I have Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam and Spam?
pretty tasty.
add some egg, green onions... viola!
