Results of a study indicate that regularly consuming a diet of pro-inflammatory foods (e.g., those rich in simple carbohydrates or in saturated fats) is associated with increased likelihood of developing frailty in middle-aged and older adults. Frailty affects between 10-15 percent of community-living older adults—making it a significant public health issue.
Approximately 1 in 6 community-dwelling older adults will develop frailty, a serious condition of impaired function of ability, which carries increased risk of falls, hospitalizations, and mortality. Previous studies linked specific nutrients with frailty or physical function but did not capture an individual's entire diet and its impact on frailty over time. To address this concern, the researchers calculated dietary inflammatory index score that reflects the overall inflammatory potential of one's diet. This study, led by Dr. Millar, looked at the role of diet-associated inflammation on the likelihood of developing frailty.
The study of 1,701 relatively healthy participants from the Framingham Heart Study found that a pro-inflammatory diet was associated with increased odds of frailty over a 12-year period. A one-point higher DII score (on a roughly 16-point scale) was associated with 16 percent higher odds of developing frailty over 12 years. The quarter of participants consuming the most pro-inflammatory diet were more than twice as likely to develop frailty as the quarter of participants who ate the most anti-inflammatory diet.
"The study indicated that regularly eating foods that contain nutrients such as dietary fiber and dietary antioxidants (such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and flavonoids) may prevent older adults from becoming frail," Dr. Millar said. "While more studies are necessary, guidelines based on an anti-inflammatory diet may help reduce the percentage of older adults who may develop frailty and related conditions such as falls and fractures, which can improve their quality of life."

Note to self: Healthy people who eat an unhealthy diet became unhealthy.
Prolly true to a degree, but common sense dictates that a sedentary lifestyle has more to do with becoming prematurely frail than anything.
I have found that being retired has been one long diet complimented with cardio and resistance training and golf. It’s real easy to put on weight and get weak if you sluff off.
I have often thought of getting a job, but decided that I don’t need the money, don’t like getting up and out early, want to be in bed by 8 PM and am too lazy. There aren’t too jobs with 12-4 shifts.
That’s funny, I am repelled by the idea of golf and cardio because I am lazy myself! My shift is 12 noon -9 PM, but it is in my home office.
In any event, I won’t be able to afford to retire anyway.
I ain't seen one of those around here for a long time.... : /
Pro-inflammatory diet? I thought you meant one of my faves, Spicy Mexican Food>>.......
me either. too many bad decisions. hard to keep up with all of them.
Rats. I just got a box of See's candies for Christmas (all for myself!) - and a pecan fruitcake from Texas.
Decisions...decisions...
More evidence of ‘hand-to-mouth’ disease among science (scientists gotta eat, too. /s)
Not sure when recycling common knowledge became acceptable for a grant application...but, then again, there’s a reason why we’re where we are as a diseased country.
I hope to publish that knowledge sometime next year.
Another easy to predict agenda push....Before I even read it, I bet it is better to have a diet low in meat (particularly red meat), less sugar, more fiber from fruit and vegetables. “Blah, blah, blah, leftist agenda, leftist agenda.”
Now on to read it...
Fiber is useless to the body and often associated with Omega 6 containing foods that fuel inflammation. The Reagan administration’s push of the food pyramid has destroyed American waistlines in favor of agricultural subsidies for corn and wheat.
I did not Reagan was president in 1992 when the USDA introduced the Food Pyramid. I thought he left office after the 1988 election.

It wasn’t Reagan.
I should’ve said DURING the Reagan administration. It started in Sweden in the 70s and was adopted by the WHO in the late 80s.
Anti-inflammatory supplements such as curcumin may be useful here.
We really are what we eat and the best chemistry for building a healthy body comes from God, as He makes it, not as we remake it or manufacture it.
His foods as He makes them keep us healthy and His foods as medicine heal and repair us when we get sick or damaged, whereas a steady diet of our factory-made foods is often the source of our problems.
Hate vegetables, legumes, fruits, nuts and berries if you want to, but that’s where the best nutrition is.
Food as grown is the way to go, not the overly-processed foods remanufactured for color, taste and long shelf life … and to make you addicted to them, too!
Fiber is useless to the body? Ah, not entirely.
