Astronomy Picture of the Day - Ninety Gravitational Wave Spectrograms and Counting

Explanation: Every time two massive black holes collide, a loud chirping sound is broadcast out into the universe in gravitational waves. Humanity has only had the technology to hear these unusual chirps for the past seven years, but since then we have heard about 90 -- during the first three observing runs. Featured above are the spectrograms -- plots of gravitational-wave frequency versus time -- of these 90 as detected by the giant detectors of LIGO (in the USA), VIRGO (in Europe), and KAGRA (in Japan). The more energy received on Earth from a collision, the brighter it appears on the graphic. Among many science firsts, these gravitational-radiation chirps are giving humanity an unprecedented inventory of black holes and neutron stars, and a new way to measure the expansion rate of our universe. A fourth gravitational wave observing run with increased sensitivity is currently planned to begin in 2022 December.

Too much body heat for seals, those must be mermaids.

Yes in my mind they’re all beautiful mermaids now.

That there is such a thing as a recordable “instant” when two things as vast and mysterious as black holes collide is still blowing my mind.

“Every time two massive black holes collide,”

How common can this be ?

I would not even expect one in my lifetime unless the universe is far more full of black holes than anyone wants to admit.

or maybe there is more to dark matter than anyone cares to admit.

There's probably a reasonable chance of this happening whenever two galaxies with supermassive black holes at their centers merge.

yes, but how often ? Super Massive things will more likely tend to do slingshot orbital things IIRC

I would never expect to see this in my lifespan

It can also be massive neutron stars, but Rosie Odonnel slamming into someone could be a couple of them too.

So unexpected in a simple 2112 solar federation thread.

In the far west coast I heard many seaman satisfied the Portopotomi and the Bremaloes, So the Rumor goes ?

I just remember this mostly

before the computer autotune controlled the narrative.

There is a new theory that perhaps it’s not a black whole but a large mass of dark matter at the center of our galaxy.

So if two ultra large masses of dark matter collide, you would probably get gravitational waves.

I still prefer my mermaid body heat theory.

I think your mermaid body heat theory is probably correct.

I think so too.

It’s the simpliest and happiest answer.

“How common can this be ?”

Well to quote Yakko...

Everybody lives on a street in a city
Or a village or a town for what it’s worth
And they’re all inside a country which is part of a continent
That sits upon a planet known as Earth
And the Earth is a ball full of oceans and some mountains
Which is out there spinning silently in space
And living on that Earth are the plants and the animals
And also the entire human race

[Chorus: Yakko]
It’s a great big universe
And we’re all really puny
We’re just tiny little specks
About the size of Mickey Rooney
It’s big and black and inky
And we are small and dinky
It’s a big universe and we’re not
