I was an ’80s baby, so this was well before my time. But apparently in the wacky culinary headspace of the 1960s, people used to drink one very particular soda, warmed but not boiled, for good cheer and good tidings. That soda was Dr. Pepper.
To be honest, out of all the sodas I could see being warmed up, it’d certainly be The Good Doctor. There’s the cherry and prune overtones, a little caffeine, syrupy sweetness—what’s not to like? Matador Network has the story of the sweet hot times, from way back when. I was made aware of it by someone I follow on Twitter, who posted a link to the article with the commentary, “Let’s bring it back. Hot Dr. Pepper.”

Back in the 60’s, the local butcher/beer store/convenience shop owner, who had the monopoly on those items in our farm town, was know to prefer his bottle of Coke warm. That would have been a 6-1/2oz bottle.
... a slice of orange works also ...
I worked at a Burger Chef in W TX for two of my college years. On cold evenings we would fill a coffee pot with Dr Pepper and after it warmed up, could be enjoyed by the whole crew. One cold evening our Most Elevated Jefe (PBUH) came in check on the night shift and asked what the pot had in it. He liked it so much that he suggested when the temp outside dropped below 50 degrees that we should put a pot on and offer it as an alternative to coffee.
Agreed. However, Wal-mart does carry four-packs of Dr Pepper bottles (glass) that use real sugar instead of HFCS.
green? cane sugar? don’t they make it in Mexico?
Exact same in Colorado.
I suppose if it’s drowned in whiskey.
hat tip..
Royal Crown Cola is the best of all the colas, IMO.
I agree
I live in the desert. I’ve had it hot. Not on purpose. Do not recommend.
Reminds me of the movie Blast From the Past.
Bingo. They thought Christopher Walken was truly crazy. (Good movie BTW) Lived in Texas 34 years and not one time had anyone I know mention it or talk about it. I’m wondering if it would really be good. Back then it was Dublin Dr. Pepper made with real cane sugar. Now its made with corn syrup.
I rarely see RC anymore :(
news guy said he attended a 6 man football game in Dublin friday night but no mention of hot dr pepper..
he said 3500 were there and the 2 teams had a total pop of like 1000 between them both!
never saw 6 man football...
thanks for the movie tip, watching it now :)
I drank hot Dr Pepper growing up in Southwest Virginia in the 1960s. Our mother would put a pan on the stovetop to heat up for when we kids came in from playing outside.
who knew sissy spacek was so damn funny? :)
I had some shasta root beer in the bed of my truck in the desert, for target practice but that damn **** blew before I ever drew a gun.. sploded in the heat..
what a mess.
Apparently it was a popular thang.
