I was an ’80s baby, so this was well before my time. But apparently in the wacky culinary headspace of the 1960s, people used to drink one very particular soda, warmed but not boiled, for good cheer and good tidings. That soda was Dr. Pepper.
To be honest, out of all the sodas I could see being warmed up, it’d certainly be The Good Doctor. There’s the cherry and prune overtones, a little caffeine, syrupy sweetness—what’s not to like? Matador Network has the story of the sweet hot times, from way back when. I was made aware of it by someone I follow on Twitter, who posted a link to the article with the commentary, “Let’s bring it back. Hot Dr. Pepper.”

I’ll miss you SF... your call.
I used to drink it as a kid. Not many others did and would wrinkle their noses if they saw me drinking it. I sort of liked it though.
Ted Williams used to drink it too. Or at least he got paid for saying that he did.
RC was the first large bottle drink as I remember it. We
served it along with the 6 oz drinks for the same price.
My favorite growing up was Dr. Pepper. Been to the
Waco site many years ago.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. High fructose corn syrup. One cola on a hot day is not going to kill anyone. It's the addicted to colas who drink them all day that get fat and all the problems that causes. I've been drinking Diet Coke for years on occasion because less syrupy and less sweet. I'm 71 and still here and in shape. I also agree that too many processed foods have HFCS in their ingredients. I look for that when buying groceries.
I call it Dr Poison. Gross stuff.
I made a Dutch oven game hen once. The recipe called for rice and chicken broth. Instead of the broth I used root beer.
Wow! Root beer rice is amazing!
Really gross crap.
I prefer my dr pepper at 33 degrees.
moxie, like root beer with dirt in it Oh I remember..
got an uncle from maine in tahoe he has moxie shipped by the case...
This is a great idea. Although, I might choose to drink hot diet Dr. Pepper.
LOL. I remember an old song on the radio titled that!
love a good dark beer
Try some warm wine. Works wonders.
I just tried it. First one was with a lemon, and they didn’t like it that much. Put a slice of orange in it and they loved it. Was much better tasting.
It’s ok if you don’t like Dr. Pepper. More for me. Plus, I think it’s owned by Snapple/ Pepsi now, anyway & no longer a Texas company.
we still got shiner and chicken express iced tea!!
well tx does..
I think sodas are not just unhealthy, but the data is strong that they hit our brains’ reward centers like a drug. Why do people drink themselves fat and ill on sodas? Because it rewires our brains to do it.
If you think you are immune to the sugar bomb in soda, then great. You do you.
I sure do!
Some stores around here carry it, sometimes.
I imagine the taste could be duplicated, somewhat, by adding Angostura bitters to a good-quality root beer.
