Omicron variant is 'at least 2.4x more likely to re-infect' than original Covid strain

The Omicron variant of coronavirus is 2.4x more likely to reinfect people than the original stain, a study from South Africa suggests.

The research, which has not been peer-reviewed, found people who had tested positive for Covid could pick up the virus again.

It did not say how the variant will behave when spreading in a highly vaccinated population such as the UK, or whether the virus can evade the protection offered by vaccines against severe disease....

..."We believe that vaccines will still, however, protect against severe disease because we've seen this decrease in protection using vaccines with the other variants - the vaccines have always held out to prevent severe disease and admission into hospital from death.

"The same things that held true for the other variants, I think, to a large extent hold true for this variant."

I didn't see the study linked. Still no news on severity or mortality, and no resolution between claiming omi infections are 'mild' compared to delta, versus an equal claim that hospitalizations doubled in 24 hours in SoAf (with 'mild'??).

as to cases in the USA, from the AP:

“Just a day after the first known U.S. case was found in California, tests showed the omicron variant had infected at least five people in the New York City metropolitan area, plus a man from Minnesota who had attended an anime convention in Manhattan in late November.

A Colorado woman who had recently traveled to southern Africa, a Hawaii resident with no recent travel history, and another California resident who traveled to South Africa last month also were infected by the variant...

“The infected New Yorkers included a 67-year-old woman on Long Island who had recently traveled to South Africa, residents of Brooklyn and Queens and another case possibly linked to travel. At least one person had received a dose of a COVID-19 vaccine ...”

Omicron symptoms : soreness & exhaustion.
The same thing you’d feel after a hard days work.
No wonder liberals are terrified of it.

The vaccines, the lockdowns, the masks — all unreasonable, all unnecessary, all useless.

Yet if it is readily contagious but causes only a mild disease, the people who get it may very well develop immunity against the more virulent strains. This may be the variant we have been seeking and may put an end to the COVID pandemic. The is the way pandemics end naturally and in the pre vaccine era is probably how the Spanish flu ended.

So is the sample size large enough for those numbers to be meaningful?

Hurry, get ten boosters until they make up another variant! Then repeat.

I have recovered from both alpha and delta versions. I volunteer to get omicron sans vaccine. It sounds less severe than a bad hangover.

At first they say the vaccines will help, then in the next sentence they admit that almost every single person who has been infected with this is fully vaccinated

I believe you are on the right track. Hopefully the virus will mutate itself harmless.

The Spanish Flu is still with us today, in many, milder forms.

the vaccines have always held out to prevent severe disease and admission into hospital from death.

+++++++++++

Fauci just admitted recently this is not true ..... since the shots don’t protect people from getting COVID or transmitting it, “you’ll get a milder case” & staying out of the hospital was the last reason left for persuading people to get the shots.

Thanks for finding that answer to my question, upthread.

Imagine that....fully jabbed.

from the article and speaking of SoAf, “”South Africa has a low vaccination rate but a large proportion of the population has been infected during previous Covid-19 waves.” and “The population of South Africa also tend to be fairly young with a median age of 27.6 years.”

so I’m going to guess not many vaccinated infected in SoAf, with an added advantage of youth.

Of the AP article people, the article noted that one person in the NY group of 5, had one vaccine (but didn’t identify whether one-shot JJ or one-of two mRna). Both California cases were vaccinated. Hawaii case was unvaccinated. “The unvaccinated adult infected with the variant in Hawaii had gotten COVID-19 a year ago. “ “The Minnesota man... had been vaccinated and received a booster shot in early November”.

So unvaccinated, partly vaccinated, recovered and vaccinated are all covered, or maybe it matters more what the individuals comorbidities that made them succeptible to infection/reinfection? I didn’t dig deep enough to find the USA ages.

hard to tell without the study itself. I’m waiting for some, any, data to come out from Amsterdam regarding the 60 or so positives hard-quarantined from int’l flights. Not a peep yet.
