Yet if it is readily contagious but causes only a mild disease, the people who get it may very well develop immunity against the more virulent strains. This may be the variant we have been seeking and may put an end to the COVID pandemic. The is the way pandemics end naturally and in the pre vaccine era is probably how the Spanish flu ended.

I believe you are on the right track. Hopefully the virus will mutate itself harmless.

The Spanish Flu is still with us today, in many, milder forms.

In the early days of smallpox which was extremely fatal at the time, dairy workers who were called milk maids were largely immune. This was because they had been exposed and probably infected by a strain ot cow pox. Cow pax was somewhat related to smallpox, you might say it was a variant that was more contagious but not as deadly. This led to the discovery of inoculation where a person would be deliberately infected with an antigen in order to gain immunity.
