The conservative news site I have operated for the last 15 years is undergoing persistent bot attacks which leave site unable to load and me unable to post news. Does anyone out there have experience with this?

Yep, I see that too.
I LOVE THAT! (Gonna steal it...)
And yet, there are posters here who engage in such infantile behavior.
Considering the circumstances of this post, to do that would be pretty childish and petty for sure.I'd almost say that was prophetic on your part, but it was just too darn easy given how predictable Humblegunner is.
Paging Humblegunner...
Please pick up the childish and petty phone.
Took a few minutes but finally loaded. I see it’s a WordPress site. Get the WordFence security plugin; https://wordpress.org/plugins/wordfence/
https://smartwayhosting.com/ (Looks totally hokey to me. Like a late night infomercial or get rich quick advertisement. I use a2hosting and as far as I know, they’re apolitical and just run a business. Very fast server and they’re proactive in keeping things secure.
*** To diagnose plugin issues, first deactivate all your plugins. If the site works fast then, reactivate on at a time. It would actually be two plugins clashing or one recently updated plugin that was poorly coded. I’ve learned how to avoid crappy or bloated plugins.
Yoast and bbPress are pretty bloated and I see no link to a forum on your site so I don’t know why you have bbPress installed. Rankmath is a very good, non bloated SEO plugin to replace that cartoonified Yoast.
Page builders like Beaver Builder can slow down a website.
I see another one. wp-Smush-Pro. I’ll have to get back with you for better image optimization plugins. Can’t think of the names off the top of my head. The latest one I started using converts all images to webp format which makes for really small file sizes. MBs turn into KBs.
My son’s biz once got an onslaught of port probes from IPs in an Eastern European nation so he blocked the IP range for the entire country.
cloudflare
We try to do that on our site also when we can. But they also use proxy and VPN portals through other countries servers. This is a problem because a lot of VPN services used here in the states also use those same VPN servers in those same countries. So to block them means also blocking half of your legitimate visitors who mean no harm. It is a challenge to block all these sometimes.
You are right... I am guilty of cheating, I knew too. lol
Just switched to conservative host Smartway. They inform me the bots are coming from my end

The only website script I ever had issues with is WordPress. So many years of hacker practice on WP.
It’s the biggest target, much like Windows.
“It’s the biggest target, much like Windows.”
Yep... And there are now a couple generations of hackers who cut their teeth on WP.
That was a good post to the OP by the way. :)
LOL!!!
Thanks.
Since her site does load, it’s likely a bad plugin or two plugins clashing.
Some sort of content could do that also. In the past on another site, a bad advertisement connection could do that. Not sure exactly how it was working, but it was like the 3rd party API connection was constantly pinging back and forth through the “hit count” process. We had to isolate and remove the problem ad.
