Teenagers from remote NT community arrested after escape from Howard Springs COVID quarantine facility (Australia)

Northern Territory police say they don't believe three teenagers who allegedly absconded from Darwin's Howard Springs COVID-19 quarantine facility this morning came into contact with members of the community.

At a COVID update press conference, NT Chief Minister Michael Gunner confirmed the teenagers, aged 15, 16 and 17, tested negative for the virus yesterday.

He said all three were from the Binjari community near Katherine and had been sent into quarantine as close contacts of positive cases.

The facility is housing people affected by the Katherine region COVID-19 outbreak as well as returned travellers from repatriation flights, including a man who tested positive for the Omicron variant on Monday.

He said the escape could mean an extension of the time the teenagers were required to stay in quarantine.

"Absconding from Howard Springs isn't just dangerous — it is incredibly stupid," he said.

"Because we will catch you and there will be consequences."

We have not given up our guns. In fact, there are now more guns legally in the hands of gun owners than before the restrictions and the average gun owner has about twice the number of guns. It is true that, unless you are a professional hunter, it is difficult to own a semi-automatic rife, but fairly easily to obtain shot guns and hand guns.

Not true. As I wrote, more guns now than before the restriction and average gun owners has twice as many. Restrictions are very bad, compared to the USA, but not hard to own, except for semi-automatic rifles. Shotguns and pistols fairly easy to obtain, but they are all licenses.

I was responding to people who keep writing that guns are banned from Australia, which is not true. I would rather have a semi-automatic shotgun for home defense, myself that a rifle. But then everyone has difference opinions.

I shouldn't have been so flippant. But the reality is with your current President and far leftists running your country, we are much freer than America. Your country currently is not protecting natural rights, I am afraid.

You can argue with the policy of closing our border to all overseas people in the beginning (I remember when Trump did it with China, there were lot of people on FR advocating he do the same thing in the USA), but let's face it you cannot even keep hundreds of thousand of people illegally coming into the USA. I personally was against closing our borders. When people starting coming back, they had to stay in quarantine for 14 days, that was their choice if they came into Australia.

Now for the aboriginal people, there is a very small community where the Covid broke out and, as I explained, the only reason the military was used is that they were there and the NT is so small in population, is that they barely have a police force. Granted, you can argue that police/military should not been used to help control the situation. Most of those people can leave the facilities, many don't want to because the facilities are so much better than they live. The are containing those who have the covid that could endanger their community, but can go back. This is hardly a concentration camp or internment camp.

What you in America are doing to your people for trespassing on the capital grounds, no bail, is not protecting natural rights....solitary confinement, little representation, cannot talk to their relatives, and when convicted given tougher sentences than the USA gives to rioters.

So I believe things are so bad in the USA right now, many people are looking for scapegoats, that they can use. Things for sure are not perfect here and we have a lot of things that must be improved, but I would much prefer to live in Australia which is currently much more free than the USA.

Rights are being violated here but we have a Constitution that recognizes natural rights. No other country on Earth does.

I thought maybe you were not referring to your Constitution, but maybe to your Bill or Rights? We have a Constitution in Australia https://www.aph.gov.au/constitution approved between 1888 -1898. It was officially adopted when Australia became a country on January 1, 1901 and there have been 8 amendments.

But then, I looked up what maybe you were referring to as "natural rights". And you meant nature rights as those not written in laws as in your constitution: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty & the pursuit of Happiness.”

Of course the USA itself did not follow this with black people until the 13th amendment. Australia was even worse, we didn't allow aboriginals to vote until 1962. In our constitution Australians have 5 basic rights: There are five explicit individual rights in the Constitution. These are the right to vote (Section 41), protection against acquisition of property on unjust terms (Section 51 (xxxi)), the right to a trial by jury (Section 80), freedom of religion (Section 116) and prohibition of discrimination on the basis of State of residency (Section 117).

So I guess, in this instance of the meaning of “natural rights”, you are correct. I wish we did have the same Bill of Rights as you do, but it appears that your government violates the Bill of Rights all the time with your current administration. I believe we both have enough internal problems not to be too critical of each other.
