We’ve been keeping track of plant-based meat alternatives for a while now. This year, vegan chicken offerings have sprung up big time, and overall, the momentum has felt strong. But now, the Financial Times reports that sales of plant-based meat are starting to fall. This might come as a surprise given the wild amount of choices at grocery stores these days, but it turns out that variety might actually be part of the problem.
A data group called SPINS found that in the four weeks prior to October 3, sales of vegan meat substitutes dropped 1.8% as compared to 2020. There are several likely reasons for this (it’s been a complicated year, everyone). Not only have dining restrictions lifted in many areas, meaning a dip in grocery sales, but supply chain issues have also caused some store shelves to go empty for periods of time.
Maple Leaf Foods, a Canadian company that owns a plant-based protein brand called Green Leaf, along with Beyond Meat, logged weak sales over the past few weeks too. Maple Leaf CEO Michael McCain told analysts earlier this month, “In the past six months, unexpectedly, there has been a rapid deceleration in the category growth rates of plant-based protein.”

People tried it and didn't like it.
It cant have the same mouth feel.
Back when BK came out with their "just like the real thing" burger a friend and I decided to do a real taste test. The BK near us had decent burgers (very important some are just nasty) so we went and ordered one real and one fake, plain made fresh.
We split them and evaluated. Both of us found the fake just weird as far as texture and taste went. They did pour plenty of salt on it but that was not enough.
If you did a fully loaded you might find it acceptable.
Ketchup covers a multitude of sins.
They’re failing because the few people that tasted them, don’t like them. hahaha
BK's quality really depends on the location. The one across the bridge is decent. Not great but it will be made fresh and hot. Every other one in a twenty mile radius is awful. Often they are literally cold burgers because they grill the patties and then just leave them sitting around for slapping together.
I agree on BK QC but Mcdonald always sucks!!
Why does your daughter eat vegan?
About 30 years ago, Burger King had a “veggie burger”.
Just out of curiosity, I ordered one.
Tasted like crap.
Even with cheese and bacon.
Well, two reasons. She married into a liberal family and is worried about the animals’ suffering (which can be true like the way chickens will live their entire lives in a closed up barn packed like sardines). And to lose weight which has worked well for her. She’s almost down to her pre-baby weight without even exercising!
For me on my no-meat weeks, it’s simply to keep my blood work in check, and nearing 60 to keep the pounds off.
