GREENWOOD, S.C. (AP) — Police responding to a fire alarm and the sound of gunshots at a South Carolina assisted living facility say a resident had placed several rounds of ammunition in a toaster.

The ammunition discharged on Sunday night, making employees believe a shooter was on the property, police in Greenwood, South Carolina said. Greenwood is about 70 miles (113km) northwest of Columbia.

A small fire in the resident’s room was extinguished. The resident was found unconscious and taken to the hospital to be treated for apparent smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported, police said.

"The ammunition discharged on Sunday night... A small fire in the resident’s room was extinguished."

What time of the night did this alleged incident occur in a resident's room at a South Carolina assisted living facility?!?

Are residents in South Carolina assisted living facilities allowed to have toasters in their rooms?!? That would seem like a firecode safety no-no.

And that's not even considering whether ammo is allowed in South Carolina assisted living facilities, unless the faciity has turned into an "assisted suicide" facility.

There's too much missing information in the linked article.

Video from SAAMI on the danger posed by ammunition set off by the heat of a fire (and not confined in a firearm's barrel).

I doubt that is covered by the toaster’s warranty.
Not a good place to hide my emergency money.

I would say that the toaster is shot.

When my father’s Alzheimer’s got bad he was trying to fry eggs in a metal pan in the microwave and cook meals on the gas stove on a dinner plate so I can easily see how this could happen...

Thanks. I won’t just discard an old microwave without properly seasoning it:)

I’m faced with that difficult choice every morning: bagel or 30.06. So hard to decide. Then I ask myself: which one butters better?

Don't know about the butter thing - but I can definitely recommend the '06 over a bagel, if you ever need something to help open a great big can of tomato paste...

;>)

No big deal...
Loading ammo into a toaster is so much easier on my 88-year-old thumbs & fingers than into those dang 30-round mags...

“Automatic Assault Toaster?”

if so, it was an illegal Automatic Assault Toaster, because those have been banned ... but maybe one of the old codgers brought it back from the war ...

And I just watched the movie RED last night, where Bruce Willis turns on a burner of the stove and drops a half dozen 9mm rounds in a skillet...same results I’m sure...

My uncle’s house in channelview (southeast of Houston) caught fire in the late 70’s. Fire fighters had to move back a couple of blocks and wait when over 1000 rounds of ammo started to go off...plenty 22, 38, 357, 12 gauge, 20 gauge, 30-30...probably others, that’s just what I knew of.

They heard a few rounds and he yelled oh shit it’s my ammo...everybody left fast.

I am not buying that a toaster will set a round off. I’m probably not an expert like the ones at AP. I only shoot about 15000 a year.

So if you add enough heat, you can cook off ammunition. Secondary reactions were common when bunkers were bombed in the 91 gulf conflict, which I was present in, and in many instances since. The old cowboy movies where someone drops some cartridges in a fire are half correct. The cartridge can ‘fire’ but it’s likely that only the case, not bullet will move, and then only small distances as you need the confinement of the expanding gases in a gun chamber to get the bullet to accelerate appreciably.

It would make for a fun episode of Truth Busters.
