THE GREAT REBELLION: The Rebel Capital is Transferred to Nashville; A Descent of the National Army Feared (11/26/1861)

Body of Thread: WASHINGTON, Monday, Nov. 25.

Private intelligence received by the Government to-day states that the movement of the seat of Government from Richmond to Nashville was caused by the general belief that soon our army would march against that city, preparatory to going into Winter quarters, and that it was deemed safe to remove the archives of the rebel Confederacy to a point less exposed. Sharing in this belief, many of the higher families had already packed up most of their movable property, to be in readiness to leave the city in case of a demonstration of our army in that direction. As a consequence of this movement on the part of the rebel Government, the rate of discount on rebel bonds had risen to 30 per cent. The fact sufficiently indicates the waning faith of the Southern people in the solvency of JEFF. DAVIS' Confederacy, and the present rate of discount shows the rottenness of the concern. When Austrian credit was the lowest, the securities of the empire were never more than 24 per cent. below par, and she recovered with difficulty, though possessing recuperative powers which the rebel States do not.

The Government have also information that the supply of winter clothing for the rebel troops is entirely inadequate to the requirements for the Winter, and that the sources of manufacture are not sufficient to supply the increasing demand. Blankets have been obtained from the beds of citizens to answer the immediate want, but their troops are in no wise prepared to stand the rigors of the Winter. They are counting confidently on going into winter quarters when our Army shall have made an advance, and a battle shall have been fought, as they believe that in any event our troops will then go into quarters

I confess I haven’t read the article. I suspect it may be fake news. The Times got a tip and didn’t get it corroborated but just ran with it. I know, hard to believe.
