Dan Mullen's tenure at Florida is over.

Florida made Mullen's firing official on Sunday afternoon after multiple outlets — including Yahoo Sports' Pete Thamel — reported that the coach was getting fired. Florida lost 24-23 to Missouri in overtime to drop to 5-6 on Saturday. Florida plays Florida State — also 5-6 — with bowl eligibility on the line in the final week of the regular season.

This has to be one of the most spectacular crash and burns in college football history. From 3 New Year's Six bowl appearances to getting fired. Once Jim McElwain's players left, Mullen had nobody except perhaps AR15. Mullen screwed that up too.

Now if the Jags will just get rid of Urban maybe the state of Florida will get back to winning teams. One can dream.

After Gators fans continue to trash Urban Meyer, who got them two championships, I enjoy watching them in perpetual mediocrity since. Ungrateful fan base.

I’m an alumnus of UF and watch the team closely....you could see this crash and burn coming a mile away....

The #1 thing a college coach has to do is not what happens on Saturday, it’s what happens on the recruiting trail, which being at UF in a state with tremendous high school football you should be able to recruit great talent to UF....unfortunately Mullen never embraced recruiting like he should have.....especially since Miami and FSU have been really down..

Last night watching the game, the announcers made the statement that of the top 20 high school players last year in Florida, only 9 signed with schools in the State, so UF, Miami, and FSU combined only signed 9 and 11 top players went out of state....that is inconceivable to me...

UF alone should be able to get 10-12 of the top 20 players....

5 current teams have dominated college football the last few years, all five recruit like crazy and no other school has been able to crack into that top 5......until they do you will continue to see high profile jobs firing coaches....

Look at LSU, they won a national title in 2019 and fired their coach earlier this year....

When you pay 7-10 million per year to a head coach, it’s win or get fired....

Two 5-6 teams facing off next week with bowl implications … now if that ain’t a sign of the sorry state of college football, then I don’t know what is.

The university will owe Mullen $12 million in buyout money after Sunday's dismissal. He will receive $6 million over the next 30 days before receiving $1 million every July 15 through 2027.

It is time to choose. Does UF commit to spending the money to compete with the elite, or to focus more on academics. But they must level set the fanbase’s expectations.

I could retire comfortably on that.

My ex was a “Bull Gator,” meaning a rich guy who gave the uni lots of money. He would have fired that jerk the minute he lost one single game.

Thanks to the talent pool he inherited.

I think the Missouri coach trolling him was the last straw.

The idea that UF hasn’t spent the money to compete is just plain wrong.....have they spent it as fast as some fans want, no but Mullen was making 7.5 million easily in the top 10 in the country, Grantham was making well over 1 million a clear top 10 amount, they have a state of the art indoor facility and a 85 million dollar football facility....should they have built it a couple of years ago, absolutely but remember they had no fans last year and that threw all programs into a tailspin...

Mullen was never denied money to hire assistants, hire recruiting staff, etc....he chose not to do some of those things...the AD is not going to go to the head coach and tell him to hire more people....

Bring in a new coach and if he wants to double the recruiting budget he’ll get it....same goes for assistants, you are not going to pay each assistant over 1 million and you are limited on how many you can hire, but UF will be in the top 10 easily for assistants pay.....

The spending money issue is just a talking point by people upset at losing and is to be expected but to a large degree it’s a farce...

Ultimately it boiled down to Mullen being a poor recruiter. It is not that UF doesn’t spend money, but the amounts that Bama and UGA are spending is ridiculous. And frankly I would support the NCAA putting a cap on spending for football programs.
