DETROIT (AP) — More cougar sightings are being confirmed in Michigan, although wildlife officials aren’t certain yet whether that means more of the animals are reclaiming the area as their home.
Ten sightings of cougars, also known as pumas or mountain lions, have been confirmed so far this year by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, all in the state’s Upper Peninsula, compared with 15 last year.
The most recent sighting in Michigan, confirmed by the agency in October, was on Sept. 16, when a photo was captured of a cougar in southern Dickinson County.
The increase in confirmed reports may come from the recent popularity of “trail” or “game” cameras strapped to trees, DNR spokesman John Pepin told The Detroit News. Hunters and wildlife enthusiasts often have multiple cameras in different locations, with those devices activating when there is movement.

Are you familiar with Fiborn Quarry? It’s off H-40 west of Trout Lake. I was hunting there with grandpa in 85 or 86 and heard one scream. Made my hair stand up and left me shaking a bit. It’s the only time in my 50 years I have been truly spooked in the woods
No. I know where Trout Lake is and have gone through many times but never did any work over there.
If you heard a scream, like a screech owl, then that was a bobcat. They will make your hair stand up on your head its so loud. Some describe it like a baby screaming.
One thing. If you ever cone face to face with one of them, NEVER turn your back. Try to back up facing them. You run and they’ll grab you by the back of the neck and get you down.
My buddy saw one in the finger lakes region while mountain biking. Bristol hills/Canandaigua area.
This was 5 miles north of Waverly, which borders PA.

I heard from two folks in ny upstate there who saw cougars on a couple of occasions, and others have seen the tracks. Cougars probably aren’t living there, but may just go through the area now and again. I know, they have lynx and bobcat there (if the lynx survived- they let a bunch go there), but the folks described the cats, which they saw just a few yards from their car as it crossed th3 road, as “dog-sized, with a long tail”, and one fella was an avid hunter, straight shooting fella whom i have no reason to doubt.
It’s such a vast park area in ny, millions of acres I believe, cats could be i guess living there but rarely seen, but the reports I’ve heard were in the last few years, so aybe there are more cats in that region now?
Had a mountain lion under my car at my house. Only the second one that I’ve seen in 54 years of living and working in the Montana mountains.

At that time, a friend was building his house on Avon mountain, in a wooded area. This cat ran through his yard, with a radio collar on it.

Hummmmmmmmmmmmmm
already back when cougars were still supposedly extinct in Wisconsin, the cougars that were appearing in the NE corner like Pembine seemed to be rumored/sighted coming down from the North.
I think somewhere along the line a few cut across Northern Wisconsin and formed a breeding group in the UP that disseminated from there and this is just the DNR now verifying a larger number of the sightings that were previously “misidentifications” or the population is now large enough that the sightings are much more frequent and cant be denied.
Lots of cougars in FL.
S. Beach and Dania beach have the highest population.
Biscayne bay is up there too.
5.56mm
We had trouble with that in ND for a while. “You don’t have a biology or wildlife management degree, so whatever you say is just anecdotal...”
Then, a few years back, a rancher pulled up in front of the DNR, dropped the tailgate, and put a dead cougar on their steps.
Since then, the ‘impossible’ is not only ‘possible’, but well recognized. Hunters have taken the cougar that ran the deer toward them rather than shoot the deer, and game camera still and video have made it known that they are far more widespread than ever thought, even within a couple miles of some of the larger towns.
Always, until you bring them a dead one (cougar, not cow).
