‘Don’t get mad at us’: Bartenders worry about unruly customers, lost tips as L.A. vaccine proof mandate goes into effect

With Los Angeles County’s new COVID-19 vaccine proof requirements now in effect for bars and other venues, bartenders are faced with turning away paying customers and worrying about having to deal with unruly patrons.

The venues will have to make sure that customers aged 12 and older have taken two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or one dose of Johnson & Johnson at least 14 days before trying to enter the venue.

But critics have voiced concern over the differing rules in the city and county sowing confusion for businesses and customers, and putting those in L.A. at an unfair disadvantage.

For Anthony Salvi, a bartender at The Blue Room in Burbank, it’s been “aggravating” having to deal with the multitude of COVID-19 closures and restrictions imposed during the past year that he feels were meant to deter people from visiting bars.

“What do we do? Say you can’t come here anymore after 20 years? It’s just it’s not a good thing when health departments and and governments try to run your business for you,” Salvi said.

In Pomona, a bartender at the Back Door Cocktail Lounge said she was worried about customers becoming aggressive after being asked for their vaccine cards.

The bartender, who only provided her first name as Shonna, recalled customers getting mad and slamming doors after being asked to mask up when bars were first allowed to reopen. She worries it’ll be the same when asking for vaccine proof.

Senior policy manager at the Los Angeles County Business Federation, Sarah Wiltfong, told the Associated Press that harassment of workers tasked with verifying vaccine status is the top concern.

Inspectors visited 78 bars between Oct. 16 and Oct. 22, and found that 85% percent were in compliance with customer vaccine verification requirements.

I have some sympathy for their situation. However, I have much more sympathy and respect for those standing up for people’s rights and losing their jobs over the mandate.

I had the J&J Vaccine 8 months ago. According to “Science” it is now around 10% effective. Am I fully vaccinated?

California. Where you have to show a vax passport to have a drink, but can steal up to $900 in store merchandise before law enforcement will do anything.

It very simple. They just need to have the clientelle flash them anything that looks legit. If the paper is phony, they can rightly claim their door people/hostesses are not forensic document examiners.

“when health departments and and governments try to run your business for you,”

He gets it. Its about controlling the means of production. First step on the road to total control.

I guess there are times when organized lying is justified.
Especially so, when the rules are arbitrary, contrary and just plain stupid. We are moving into a Speak-easy mentality, where natural human behavior is ignored by policymakers.

So, I can be symptomatic for Delta but as long as I got a passport then I’m free to spread. Got it.

In Chicago, the Restaurants Downtown and the Near North are still doing Mayor Lighthead’s dirty work. The Restaurant employees think that by being rude to customers over face masks will somehow pay off.

I have told two restaurant owners/managers that I will never go to their businesses ever again - they just said “ok” They are in the tank for the Democrat Mayors and would rather go out of business than fight the mandates.

Anyone who was not a coward disregarded the prohibition laws - and will disregard these illegal mandates as well.

Yes, there is risk, but freedom comes at a cost - if we don’t fight back we will lose it all.

I think the Democrats and RINOs who supported the lockdowns and mandates will be utterly destroyed in the 2022 and 2024. But can we wait that long?

They can do a lot of damage in the meantime.

“I’m not on government pay roll I’m not enforcing their rules.”

Whoa, whoa, whoa!! Remember during the Trump admin years, rat states and cities stated they DID NOT have to assist with immigration enforcement? Some bs about involuntary servitude...

It is good that you spoke the truth to those restaurant owners.

Sometimes it takes a while for the message to sink in—in their case the “teaching moment” may hit when they look at their monthly income statement.

Then they will remember what you said.

If you don't want people to get mad, don't enforce the mandate.

This isn't that hard.

Its an easy solution.
I tell them “Get used to starving” and then leave.
They need us far more than we need them.

Here’s an idea... don’t enforce it! After all, you are a bartender. You didn’t sign up for this, and police-work belongs with the bouncers or the police.
