Blank ammunition has a distinctive look: a crimped or wadded tip instead of a bullet. But dummy rounds are supposed to be stand-ins for real bullets, inert but identical or nearly identical.
"You know, it's the most concerning thing to me when I'm on set because they are intentionally made to look identical to a live round," Bryan Carpenter, a longtime armorer whose recent work includes USA Network’s "Queen of the South," told Fox News Digital.
Depending on the manufacturing process, some have a hole in the casing. High-end dummies don’t, according to Carpenter.
Santa Fe deputies said they recovered a mix of blank rounds, dummies and real bullets from the set after the accidental shooting.
"You have to go through and just be ultra, mega careful with these things — because they look identical," Carpenter stressed.
He told Fox News Digital that the practical way to be sure a round is a dummy and not real is to shake it and listen for the distinct sound of B.B.s rattling inside.
"The only way to actually identify if a round is a dummy round or not is to physically have it in your hand and physically shake it," he said. "That's it. Period. I mean, there's literally no other way to do it."

How do you know that? Everything I've read says these claims are false.
And your usage of the terms "bimbo" and "posing for selfies" tell me you've already judged her before the evidence has been presented.
What is it about this woman that makes people want to scapegoat her before we've heard the rest of the facts?
Dummy bullets are used in scenes in which the gun is pointed at the camera and you need the appearance of slugs in the cylinder. Dummy bullets are also used in scenes in which an actor is shown to be loading a gun.
Blanks are used in scenes where a flash, a bang, smoke and a recoil need to occur.
This is not true according the Assistant Director’s attorney.
No wonder Alec is pooping his pants like Joe Biden.
Works for me.
Bye Alec.
I am well aware of that.
I am also well aware of the single action loading and unloading process.
My favorite gun and it is grossly under rated by the present generation.
Nevertheless, it should be done when one is given a weapon.
And fanning is an absolute no-no. It will ruin a single action.
Blanks simply do not look like live rounds.
Thanks for your responses.
A circus it was indeed and Arec Barwin was the ringmaster.
Soon to be reduced to scooping up after the elephant. :)
+1.
For a revolver you just open the cylinder and look. Next you rod the barrel to make sure there isn’t an obstruction that would be launched by the blank. Shooting for checking in just really stupid.
Dummy rounds do not contain BBs. Those would be “snake shot”: making the pistol shoot shotgun-like projectiles.
Dummy rounds don’t have primer or powder. You won’t be able to shoot a snake with the things
With an SAA you open the gate, not the cylinder. Secondly, what good is looking at a dummy round loaded in a gun going to tell you? Many look just like live rounds.
And far as testing for dummy rounds by dry-firing, that is standard procedure for many movie armorers.
That doesn’t tell you anything. Both live rounds and dummy rounds look just like that.
The point is, anyone who actually knows enough to assume the position as an "armorer" would know how to keep the set safe, even from imbeciles.
