Him and Townes always caught my ear. Not sure why. I suppose I dig the songs.

Have a cat named Townes, for the sake of the song. The little bastard sings us awake every morning at 5:30 a.m. to go potty.

I met Townes Van Zandt at Poor David’s Pub back in ‘94. He smelled like the road. I swore to God that night that I would never ever live like that. Seemed to be a shitty life, and I am right.

Met Waits once and he was a dickhead. I know why...

The road will kill you...

At the door sat Tom Waits
In a pork pie hat and silver skates
Jugglin’ three collection plates Jesus Christ
Townes Van Zandt standin’ at the bar
Skinnin’ a Hollywood movie star
Can’t remember where he parked his car
Or to whom he lost the keys
Full of angst and hillbilly haiku
What’s a poor Ft. Worth boy to do
Go on rhyme somethin’ for em’ man
Show him how you really feel

In college I worked the campus radio station and worked annually (3 yrs) on their Banjo, Fiddle and guitar Festival. One of my tasks was handling the “Green Room” ( it was the coaches lounge in the gym) in that role I dealt with a lot of people and talent.

some of the nicest were: Bonnie Raitt, Kenny Rogers, Linda Ronstat, Guy Clark, John Prine, Doc Watson, Jimmy Buffet, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely, Robert Earl Keene and Lyle Lovet

others not so nice were: John Stewart and Steve Earle

Mind you some of their managers were jerks, but the talent were usually very nice.

I heard Steve Earle was a jerk. Sorry, I know he is Texan.

Bonnie Raits guitar man Steven Bruton was a sweet soul. I knew his brother Sumpter and his parents record shop by TCU on University St. in Ft. Worth.

In my wild days, I hung with Edd Shaver (Billy Joe’s kid) down in Waco. We tore Chelsea’s up. And Austin. We fucked some shit up. Good times. Also hanged with the Sexton bros and The Gourds. Made friends and enemies. Still pals with a few of them. Brauns (Reckless Kelly) are my peeps.

If I were on the road now, I would not be on the road, just saying.

You can’t rock out to his stuff but it certainly is entertaining.

Sixteen Shells From A Thirty-Ought-Six

But I really love his acting. I’ll watch a movie I know going in is crappy if he’s in it, just to see what new weirdness he’s brought with him.

Hadda look this up...

“Down by Law is a 1986 American black-and-white independent film written and directed by Jim Jarmusch and starring Tom Waits, John Lurie, and Roberto Benigni.
The film centers on the arrest, incarceration, and escape from jail of three men. It discards jailbreak film conventions by focusing on the interaction between the convicts rather than on the mechanics of the escape....”

A good film. Very noir in places. Benigni’s lack of English makes him pretty entertaining. Waits is also in the Coen brothers’ “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.”

Nice. I love Townes, good and bad. Breath was hard as kerosene.
