‘Rust’ Film Armorer Says Someone May Have Put Bullet in Gun
Breitbart ^ | 11/4/21 | BREITBART NEWS

(AP) — The woman in charge of weapons on the movie set where actor Alec Baldwin fatally shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins said Wednesday night that she had inspected the gun Baldwin shot but doesn’t know how a live bullet ended up inside.

“Who put those in there and why is the central question,” Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer for the movie “Rust” said in a statement issued by one of her lawyers, Jason Bowles of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

“Hannah kept guns locked up, including throughout lunch on the day in question (Oct. 21), and she instructed her department to watch the cart containing the guns when she was pulled away for her other duties or on a lunch break.”

The statement goes on to say that “Hannah did everything in her power to ensure a safe set. She inspected the rounds that she loaded into the firearms that day. She always inspected the rounds.”

The statement adds that she inspected the rounds before handing the firearm to assistant director David Halls “by spinning the cylinder and showing him all of the rounds and then handing him the firearm.”

“No one could have anticipated or thought that someone would introduce live rounds into this set,” Gutierrez Reed’s statement said.

The statement also noted that “she did firearms training for the actors as well as Mr. Baldwin, she fought for more training days and she regularly emphasized to never point a firearm at a person.”

On Oct. 29, attorneys for Hannah Gutierrez-Reed said she doesn’t know where the live rounds found there came from and blamed producers for unsafe working conditions.

I have read your message. No where in there did I see you suggest the possibility that a disgruntled Union member deliberately changed the blanks or dummy rounds to live rounds.

Why are you so quick to judge this woman with no consideration for alternative explanations?

The union walking out and the shooting happening on the same day is an awfully big coincidence.

I agree.

He was dumbfounded. He later learned his brother-in-law had used the gun to shoot a squirrel when the owner wasn’t there, and had forgotten to unload the gun.He was dumbfounded. He later learned his brother-in-law had used the gun to shoot a squirrel when the owner wasn’t there, and had forgotten to unload the gun.

I solve that problem by never unloading the gun. It's *ALWAYS* dangerous. It's *NEVER* safe.

Exactly my first thought. For those of us who remember what Unions did to discredit "scabs", we know this is not beyond their past behavior.

The armorer girl was non-Union.

I found this company J&M Spec. LLC that sells dummy rounds. Here is their good explanation of their four approaches to quick visual detection and safety. They also sell rounds painted entirely black.
Empty Primer Pockets – This option is the most basic form of any new brass. There is an empty space where the primer (round piece in the center at the bottom of the case) would be. This option aids in identifying these as inert and is fine for most displays, reenactors, or dry-firing, though we have had trouble with them cycling in some Glock pistols after releasing the striker.
Rubber Inserts – This is the most popular option for gunsmiths and those doing dry-fire training and function checking. The orange rubber insert replaces the primer and enables the user to see firing pin engagement as well as aiding in identification as inert. It also gives comfort to those who believe in “cushioning the blow” to the firing pin while dry-firing.
Spent Primers In – This is the best option for film props, reenactors, and displays where the most realistic looking cartridges are required. A spent (fired) primer is inserted into the cartridge case so that the only difference in appearance between it and a live round is the indention in the primer caused by the firing pin. These are the most realistic looking dummy rounds available!
Holes Drilled (& Empty Primer Pockets or Rubber Inserts) – For this option, we drill a single hole in each cartridge case. This is a further aid in identifying the cartridges as dummy rounds

We don't yet know if all the rounds were real or all the rounds were fake, or some were real and some were fake.

We don't know. They may all have been real.

She really is stupid isn’t she? No duh someone put a bullet in a real gun, who else the bullet fairy?

Disgruntled Union thug during a walkout, upset about the fact the company had hired so many non union employees, and specifically the armorer.

I guess you could call such a person a "bullet fairy" if you wanted to do so.

These weren’t dummies.

Yes, they were dummies (except 1 obviously). This has been widely reported from a sworn affidavit by the armorer herself as well as multiple statements from her lawyers.

Yup. I’m curious about the other two pistols, as well. And how much shooting the script called for in the scene they were rehearsing.

If someone put a bullet in the gun and told Baldwin it wasn’t loaded, that someone should be charged with second-degree murder. That said, the instant you pick up a gun, prop or not, you become responsible for what happens when the gun is in your hand. Rule #1 of gun safety, according to my grandfather, is the gun is always loaded even if you personally unloaded it 5 minutes ago.

You’re welcome. It’s interesting that they don’t include a BB in the casing with the hole in it for audible as well as visual inspection.

From information I read on another website, they weren't filming. Alec Baldwin was having a little hissy fit about a rehearsal and fired the gun because he wanted to make some sort of stupid point.

The person hit was not an actor, she was some sort of camera angle director or something. There was absolutely no rational reason for firing a gun at her other than a bitchy attitude from Alec Baldwin.

I am told that when they are doing camera shots on a weapon being fired, they use plexiglass or bulletproof glass so that the camera isn't damaged from the muzzle blast.

Even blanks are dangerous, which makes it all the more stupid for Alec to have done this.

That is as I understand it. Leaves me curious as to whether he had more than enough rounds to do the scene as scripted, or if he was going to reload after his stunt.

I believe he was supposed to be seated in a church pew and shoot an unsuspecting character. I don’t know if the scene called for anyone to return fire. (Possibly with live rounds) That’s what makes me wonder about the other two pistols. Was someone going for a simple on-scene mishap? Was it an accident caused by live ammo going unnoticed after plinking? That’s certainly gross negligence.

Elle: Um, yes, your Honor. Um, Ms. Windham, when you arrived back at the house, was your father there?
Chutney: Not that I saw, but like I said, I went straight upstairs to take a shower.
Elle: And when you came downstairs what happened?
Chutney: I saw Brooke standing over his body drenched in his blood.
Elle: Um. But Mrs. Windham didn’t have a gun?
Chutney: No, she’d stashed it by then.
Emmett (Luke Wilson): Move to strike that from the record. It’s speculation.
Judge: So striken.
Elle: Um, Ms. Windham, did you hear a shot fired?
Chutney: No, I was in the shower.
Elle: Okay, sooo...sometime in the twenty minutes that you were in the shower, your father was shot.
Chutney: I guess.
Elle: Your father was shot while you were in the shower, but you didn’t hear the shot because, um...because you were in the shower?
Chutney: Yes, I was washing my hair.
Professor Callahan: Where is she going with this?
Emmett: Have a little faith George.
Elle: Um, Ms. Windham, what had you done earlier that day?
Chutney: I got up. Got a latte. Went to the gym. Got a perm and came home.
Elle: Where you got in the shower?
Judge: I believe the witness has made it clear that she was in the shower.
(Courtroom audience laughs)
Elle: Yes, your Honor.
(A sudden brainstorm comes over Elle)
Elle: Ms. Windham, had you ever gotten a perm before?
Chutney: Yes.
Elle: How many would you say?
Chutney: Two a year since I was 12. You do the math.
Elle: You know, a girl in my sorority, Tracy Marcinco got a perm once. We all tried to talk her out of it. Curls weren’t a good look for her. She didn’t have your bone structure, but thankfully that same day she entered the Theta Delta Phi wet t-shirt contest where she was completely hosed to down from head to toe—
Prosecutor: Objection, why is this revelant?
Elle: I have a point, I promise.
Judge: Then make it.
Elle: Chutney, why is it Tracy Marcinco’s curls were ruined when she got hosed down?
Chutney: Because they got wet.
Elle: Exactly. Because isn’t the first cardinal rule of perm maintenance that you’re forbidden to wet your hair for at least 24 hours after getting a perm at the risk of deactivating the immonium thygocolate?
Chutney: Yes.
Elle: (on a roll, speaking quickly) And wouldn’t somebody who had, say, 30 perms before in their life be well aware of this rule, and if in fact you weren’t washing your hair as I suspect you weren’t because your curls are still intact, wouldn’t you have heard the gunshot, and if in fact you had heard the gunshot Brooke Windham wouldn’t have had time to hide the gun before you got downstairs. Which means you would have had to found Brooke Windham with a gun in her hand to make your story plausible, isn’t that right?
Chutney: She’s my age, did she tell you that? How would you feel if your father married someone who was your age?
Elle: You, however, Chutney had time to hide the gun after you shot your father.
Chutney: I didn’t mean to shoot him! (at Brooke) I thought it was you walking through the door!
Elle: Oh my God.
Judge: Oh my God.
Brooke: Oh my God.
(Courtroom audience gasps in surprise)
Judge: Bailiff put witness in custody for the murder of Joseph Windham. Case dismissed. Mrs. Brooke Windham: you’re free to go.

There are also dummy rounds used in gunbelts and bandoleers. These dummies have intact but inert primers, and you would have to unload the revolver to check them. Being a rookie armorer, I would not be surprised if Hannah used them in her prop guns.

I've also read that at least one of the replica SAA's Baldwin used was modified to only fire blanks, and dummy (or live) rounds could not even be loaded. Sounds like they had separate guns for scenes that required dummy rounds and scenes with blank rounds.

To my mind, she is an impressive young lady. And she's no rookie. No way would she do anything that would disappoint her father who was a well known armorer.

Take a look at pictures of Annie Oakley.
