TODAY’S CRYPTOGRAM

TOPICS: Chit/Chat
KEYWORDS: todayscryptogram
You can find this fun quotation puzzle, to combat early dementia and senility in us baby boomers, in several daily publications. I challenge us with the best ones out there.

The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).

Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated, you’ll be solving them all within a few days.  If you’re stumped, take a break and return to it.

PLEASE DO NOT post the answer in general comments, but DO post your time and how you made out.

You can certainly send your solution to my private reply, or if you need a hint for today’s Cryptogram ASK THE GROUP FOR HELP!

I suggest printing these out and work them on paper. If you need a little help you can copy and paste it to Hal’s Helper below.

You can then work on the puzzle without using pen and paper, but I recommend that you do NOT look at the letter counter.

   HAL'S CRYPTOGRAM HELPER

One last request. Feel free to post a fun or clever clue, the more tangential to the quotation the better, but please don’t put the actual words of the quote in the clue.

Solution to bonus puzzle number 1:

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and caldron bubble.
Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the caldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt and toe of frog,
Wool of bat and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg and howlet's wing,
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and caldron bubble.
Cool it with a baboon's blood,
Then the charm is firm and good.

Not as tough as I first thought,

The key for me was getting the right three letter ending for the longer words, and then good guesses on the most common vowels, and then the third word.

6th and 8th words repeated are the key; grammatically, I guessed at the last 3 letters.

With that in place, the repeated letters 1 and 3 in those words, made converting those words a cinch.

That gave word 1, and then word 2, and off to the races.

Just over a minute.

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT:

There is only one ping list for TODAY’S CRYPTOGRAM.

I have taken over maintenance of the ping list, posting puzzles on weekends, and posting previous puzzle solutions every day, to relieve Nikos of some of the more tedious chores. The ping goes out with the solution to the previous day’s puzzle, unless I screw up. (Not impossible.)

There is only one TODAY’S CRYPTOGRAM. I am not setting up a separate list or thread.

I hope this clears up any confusion.

About four minutes. I stumbled with fitting individual letters until I picked a common two-letter word at the start of the quote. That two-letter word got me the author's first name, which opened up the rest of the puzzle.

Had me stumped without the usual entry words, then “snap” it became clear.
