Look: Another Very Controversial Ruling In Michigan-Michigan State Game
The Spun ^ | Oct 30, 2021 | Alek Arend

Controversy will unfortunately be the story of Saturday’s marquee Michigan–Michigan State clash if the Spartans come back and win this afternoon’s game.

Late in the second quarter, Michigan linebacker David Ojabo strip-sacked Michigan State quarterback Payton Thorne. The ball rolled into the end-zone before Wolverines star Aidan Hutchinson recovered it for a touchdown to make it a 26-14 Michigan lead.

The refs reviewed the play to check whether or not Thorne was down before he fumbled the ball. Replay appeared to confirm it was a clean fumble before Thorne hit the ground. The replay center somehow saw otherwise. The officials overturned the call, ruling Thorne down before the fumble occurred and taking a Michigan defensive touchdown off the board.

We have no clue how the officials came to that conclusion. This is an absurdly bad call.

The officials determined the Michigan State QB was down because his ankle was on the ground with possession. But his knee did not hit the ground and he was rolled over by the tackle.

I have literally watched hundreds (if not thousands) of replays on whether the ball carrier was down, never until this call was the ankle used as the determination, it was the knee (butt, elbow, head).

This call can now change how being down is determined.

I thought it was a textbook example of a perfect turnover.

"when a runner is contacted by an opponent and touches the ground with any part of his body other than his hands or feet. The ball is dead the instant the runner touches the ground"

Ankle is considered part of the leg.

If that’s the rule than I would agree it was the right call. What adds to the confusion is that it sounded like the booth announcer ref was saying the TD would be confirmed.

However, IMHO Michigan FUBAR’d the next play by not receiving the punt and letting the ball roll over 30 yards.

Ever since Dez Bryant got screwed out of his catch against GB back in 2015, I feel football has become fixed.

Targeting calls in college football have gone full retard.

F*** the “Eagles” they’re the HURONS!

Do you know who was all for keeping the Hurons moniker? The freaking Huron Indian tribe! It was an early case of PC stupidity and they will always be Hurons to me.

I remember it being a knee down as from my very young days as a fan. But that was then. Today, it could be with everyone now taking knees, they had to change the rule.

It’s been my understanding that the ankle counts as being down. It’s rare though.

That said, Michigan didn’t help themselves by just giving the ball away on a hand off. The Michigan St. running back did a number on them - if you can’t stop the run game...

I’m in Michigan and support both teams, an edge to Michigan but this was a deserved win for State. Great rivalry.

19 posts and not one person pointed out that the Spartans indeed did come back to win this game with a very exciting finish.
