‘Rust’ armorer has ‘no idea’ where live rounds came from and blames deadly accident on cost-cutting bosses

The rookie armorer in charge of weapons when Alec Baldwin accidentally shot dead his cinematographer has insisted she has “no idea” where the live ammunition came from — and is blaming the tragedy on her cost-cutting bosses.

Lawyers for Hannah Gutierrez-Reed told NBC late Thursday that the 24-year-old former model “is devastated and completely beside herself over the events that have transpired” on the set of Baldwin’s “Rust.”

“Safety is Hannah’s number one priority on set. Ultimately this set would never have been compromised if live ammo were not introduced,” her attorneys, Jason Bowles and Robert Gorence, said in a statement.

“Hannah has no idea where the live rounds came from,” the attorneys insisted, saying all the guns had been locked up each night.

Gutierrez-Reed — who was working only her second job as armorer — also insisted she was understaffed, undertrained and overruled when she tried to improve safety on the New Mexico set before Baldwin accidentally shot dead Halyna Hutchins, 42, last Thursday.

“Hannah was hired on two positions on this film, which made it extremely difficult to focus on her job as an armorer,” the statement said.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed Gutierrez-Reed has complained of being undertrained and overworked before the accident. “She fought for training, days to maintain weapons and proper time to prepare for gunfire but ultimately was overruled by production and her department.

“The whole production set became unsafe due to various factors, including lack of safety meetings,” it said of the movie that days earlier avoided a strike by the crew.

Gutierrez-Reed appeared to confirm earlier reports that there had already been an “accidental discharge” of a weapon at least twice during filming, insisting she was not responsible for either.

I’m leaning a bit more toward union sabotage.

Yep.

I wasn’t too impressed with her work. Some of it I blame on the photographer.

Genetics and partying seem to have conspired to bulk her up quite a bit.

Don’t give a rats azz if it’s a SAA and a pain to completely eject all the rounds/cases. To KNOW that it is ONLY loaded with blanks, you have to REMOVE all the casings, inspect, and RELOAD with only blanks.

This pointing of fingers at others won’t fly. The armorer handing a weapon to a stoopid actor and saying ‘good to go’ - she holds a LOT of culpability in this. As well as the bangswitch puller pointing at a person.

Heard other stories the crew were shooting the prop guns after work for target practice.

No, she doesn’t. Did she have nothing but real ammunition, and then loaded because that was all she had? Right. I’m betting that she doesn’t know the difference between blanks and the live ammo.

Yeah, because it can sneak out of the box and into firearms without you ever noticing.

If the script called for Alec Baldwin to play 'Russian Roulette', you can be damn sure that he'd check to see if it was loaded. He didn't care enough about the lives of the people he aimed at to check the gun.

The same is true of the armorer and prop master. If they were told to point the gun at their temple and pull the trigger six times before handing the gun to someone else, they'd be certain that weapon wasn't loaded with live rounds or blanks.

Alec had to pull the hammer back twice then pull the trigger while pointing the gun at the person he killed. No accident. Negligence for starters.

Alec had to pull the hammer back twice then pull the trigger...

He fired one time; the single round killed the first victim as it passed through to the second.

Everybody is forgetting one thing, the jerk who did not practice safety procedures and fired the gun that killed the lady.

I think he's saying an SAA hammer required two clicks. But I think you can pull it back with one motion.

Here's something I bet you don't know, and it probably doesn't apply here: If you hold the trigger down on an SSA you can fire it repeated and quickly by slamming down the hammer, usually with the side of youe hand. You only pull the trigger once and hold it down. It's called "fanning".

That’s right. It’s always an accident.

Actually, it’s pretty easy especially with a home protection firearm. Don’t bring it loaded to the cleaning area.

The presence of "live" rounds or real firearms on the movie set OR IN ONE'S HOME or on one's person in the public scene is NOT the issue, so that should not be mentioned as the cause or unwanted incidents.

What IS the issue is the handling of firearms and ammunition by person untrained in safe, disciplined storage and use of them, including accountability for its discharge when in his/her physical possession.

Re: Fanning a Revolver Hammer

A revolver modified for fanning in a gunfight normally had the trigger and trigger guard removed to make it lighter and a cleaner draw from the holster. They also had the hammer lock-back removed so there wasn't a hitch in the fanning stroke.
