A hiker lost on a mountain in Colorado ignored repeated calls from rescuers — later explaining that they had been unfamiliar with the phone number, authorities said.
The person was reported missing after they didn’t return from an expedition Oct. 18 on Mount Elbert, the highest peak in the state, Lake County Search and Rescue said.
Search crews canvassed the area the following day, but couldn’t find the hiker, officials said.

Yes I saw that too. They intentionally avoided referring to this individual as either man or woman.
I can kind of understand the not answering because of ‘unknown caller’ bit but given the circumstances, answering the call might have been the best bet. Personally, at home, I don’t answer my home phone with caller ID if it comes up ‘unknown caller’, ‘unknown number’, etc. So hey.....
I have a job where I get calls from a lot of unrecognized numbers. I answer. But it made it easy for my stalker to geth through.

It had to be a woman. Women do not make eye contact while driving because they don’t want to seem inviting. I suspect it is something similar. Afraid it is some guy who is only a 5 or 6. Or a potential stalker. It is much safer and less threatening to die on a mountain in freezing cold than to take a chance on being stalked. It is kind of a giveaway that the pronoun is they.

What number would he have accepted a call from? Mom?
For an unknown number, answer the phone. Don’t say anything. If it’s an important call, the other person will start speaking. ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE LOST!

Maybe he/she/other options didn’t identify as being lost.

Right! If it’s important enough to call, it’s important enough to leave a message. If it’s not that important, and you are calling anyway, what are you doing with your life? Take a hard look at the choices you are making.
