I am a member of a group of water and wastewater professionals who manage municipal treatment facilities in Ohio. Members represent large wastewater plants, such as Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, as well as smaller cities. Concerned members are discussing their experiences with shortages of crucial chemicals and needed to treat water and wastewater.
Here is a sample email from a mid-size Ohio city:
We have seen delays in shipments of Ferric Chloride in the last 2 months and have been warned that it is not going to get better any time soon. We just bid polymer for a two year contract and only had one bidder. The suppliers told us the market is so volatile that they did not want to commit to a 1 year contract let alone a 2 year contract. The winning bid was 47% higher than our current price.
Other members are experiencing difficulties acquiring specialty chemicals. It will be interesting to see how the environmentalists react when cities can't comply with regulations due to supply chain issues.
Utility bill increases on the horizon.

Sucks to be city
We’re rural and most people have a septic system. A lot of people still have an old outhouse out back.
It is baffling how major metro areas like Lost Angeles has millions of poopers but there is almost no evidence of poop treatment facilities. Flying into/out of LAX and Burbank I look for those large squat open cylinders aerating wastewater but I never see them.
I imagine a 20 mile stretch of a 10 foot diameter underwater pipe sending all that treated poop water into the Pacific - but wouldnt that area be populated by tons of bacteria? Modern marvels of engineering!
Those who pay to be on the grid and make their excrement disappear with chemicals will soon be even more resentful of independent people’s like yourselves. Don’t be surprised if more laws are passed soon to punish people in rural areas or with septic systems. It will probably be under the guise of environmental responsibility, but don’t let that fool you. As prices rise to treat waste water, just like anti-vaxers you will be targetted by the masses and their bureaucrats
BTDT, when you have to get sodium- hypochloride shipped from texas to md, you know shts bad. Ferric is some nasty stuff. Truck loads of300 gallon totes to last a while.
I guess it’s just as well that our house is on well and septic then. People who rely on municipal water systems may be getting ‘boil water’ advisories soon if this continues.
If you’re coming in over the ocean it’s just outside your south facing window
There were shortages of chlorine shock to treat swimming pools this summer.
It’s part of the master plan for each municipality to have to redesign their WWTP to the latest technology. And then after it get built, for them to change the goal line and say you now need to treat for X,Y, & Z. So the process starts over.
And there is no longer a pot of money with low interest, long term loans for these projects.
Large animals have been composted in a variety of substrates from bedded pack manure, leaves, straw, sawdust, shavings, and municipal yard waste. Typically a ratio of 25 to 30 parts of carbon substrate to 1 part protein, with a moisture content approximately 60% is ideal. In nearly all cases surrounding a carcass with a substrate like wood shavings, sawdust (can be from green wood), wood chips, or corn silage will achieve satisfactory composting temperatures and conditions. Since composting is an aerobic process (oxygen is required), pore size and enough space for air to pass between the particles into the pile is necessary.
Soil's too rocky to bury large mammals but we have a saw mill nearby where we can get all the sawdust we need.
I see an easy solution to your wastewater concerns.
Easy.
Just have all citizens poop 10% less in the 60-90 days.
Everyone needs to (quit) doing their part.
Day 91 is going to be a very bad day!
Poop in the streets.
It’s going to be difficult for this thread to not devolve entirely into talk about poop. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
Ok I am an idiot - I’ve seen that before. Thanks! Imma look that up - if that plant services most/all of Lost Angeles poopers that’s super impressive.
Let’s go Brandon. Good thing we outsourced the making of “stuff” to a bunch of commies who enslave their own people. How’s that “service economy” thing working out?
FeCl is a Flocculant used to precipitate solids from the waste stream.
