Archaeology experts in Mexico say they have detected the ruins of almost 2,500 pre-Hispanic structures and 80 burial sites along a controversial train route project on the Yucatan peninsula. Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History did not say whether any of the remains were disturbed or destroyed by the Maya Train project, which in some places runs alongside existing rail lines. The finds range from simple stone outlines of thatched pre-Hispanic Maya homes to ceremonial platforms. Potential damage to the environment and archaeological sites are some of the reasons why critics oppose the project. The train is intended to connect Caribbean beach resorts to the peninsula’s interior in a bid to stimulate economic development.

The only time in Mexico I felt uncomfortable was walking back from dinner at night with my pregnant wife on one of the main streets in Playa Del Carmen. There was a group of local young men all making comments in Spanish(of course) towards me and my wife. They did nothing but make comments. It made my wife uncomfortable, and therefore me. Especially because I was outnumbered by about 5 to 1.
My company has a trip scheduled to Cabo next April. You have to get tested for covid coming home and going. Neither my wife or I are not vaccinated. Even though it is a company paid trip, I am not sure I really want to go back to Mexico.
It's for tourism, in this case archaeo-tourism and ecotourism. So, naturally, all the partiers in Cancun will take a couple of days out of their debauchery to look at the ruins and the parrots. ;^)
That is a shame. Maybe a surtax on the drug cartels to support Mexican archaeology would work.
I didn’t know that the Mayans had trains.
That’s why I’m on your ping list.

I like to give GGGers new stuff to choo on.
Well, I like ruins. And parrots.
But I don’t think I’d go to Mexico to see ‘em.

So graft, right?
Tourist dollars, plus whatever they spend on dope and hookers, so at least from the latter, graft is a good way to describe it.
I’ve got some fake miniature ruins in my fish tank, and the macaw is playing the piano right now. Why do I need to travel?
Sounds like a nice fish tank.
I always wanted to get a fix tank and and load it up like that!
But that would mean you are buying from them wouldn’t it?
