Gun that killed Halyna Hutchins used by crew off-set for fun: report

The prop gun that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on a New Mexico movie set had been used by crew members offsite for fun, a new report claims.

The gun, which was fired by Alec Baldwin on the set of the movie “Rust,” may have even been loaded with live rounds when it was used for what was essentially target practice, TMZ reported.

Multiple sources connected to the production of the film told TMZ that the gun was fired at off-the-clock gatherings – which could explain how a live round found its way into the gun’s chamber.

Another source who was on set told the outlet that when cops arrived they found live ammo and blank rounds stored in the same area, where the fatal mix-up could have occurred.

How much do those guns cost? Can’t they buy other weapons to use for target practice? I assume the other live rounds shot were do to the target practice and they did not see any problem with that. Nothing to look into?

So maybe the Director of Cinematography was behind the camera because the camera crew had walked out, partly due to unsafe firearms conditions like shots fired at the cameras?

The best information I’ve heard is that Baldwin, as producer, did not hire a professional armorer, but left the job to the prop manager, with the result that just about every single rule of firearm safety that I’ve ever heard about was blown off. Howie Carr had a gun dealer on last Friday who said there’s a union for professional armorers, and they had no one there.

***Even though he’s a liberal gun-control douchebag I still feel bad for the guy.***

In the past, there was a thing called “The Curse of the Gunnies” in which a vocal anti-gun proponent would be found using a firearm to threaten or kill someone.

We took great glee upon hearing of their arrest.

She does not...And it was a Pro Photo...give her a break. Her dad was an armorer. She probably knows more than half the armorers around.

I've been asking gun type etc all day....nothing. I would also like to know its original and or prior ownership. Was it from a collection??

Baldwin was practicing his quick draw...I'm sure he had done it MANY times. Why point it at someone??

Affair?

RUST is about an accidental killing....with a gun.

How much do those guns cost?

Period-piece replica pistols like the one in this instance are expensive. ($2000+) "If you have to ask, you can't afford one".

Can’t they buy other weapons to use for target practice?

There should not be any any such weapons on a set. The only weapons that should be allowed are ones specifically to be used for a scene. They should all be kept in a controlled storage area and only the Armorer or assistants should be allowed to access the storage area.

I assume the other live rounds shot were due to the target practice and they did not see any problem with that.

There are big problems with that.

Unless they had specific scenes that required live weapons fire at a target, there should have been absolutely no live ammunition anywhere on the set.

Regardless of that, it is the personal responsibility of the Armorer to maintain control of all weapons and all blank (or live) ammunition. Every weapon is supposed to be checked every time it is removed from or returned to a controlled storage area. Every time.

Every round fired must be accounted for. Every time.

Weapons are only checked out for use during scene production. They are checked in immediately after the scene is completed. Every time.

Firearms checked in are unloaded and cleared. Every time. Unused ammunition gets returned to controlled storage. Every time.

In the rare cases where live fire is required it is performed by a professional marksman. Actors should absolutely never be given a hot gun for any reason.

There is a theme song here. ("Every Time") It wasn't being followed.

Actors are pretending to shoot a bad guy. Pretending is what they do. It is their job. Most actors are not trained or even competent in using real firearms. The safety rules for movies are designed to allow the actors to do their job safely. Other professionals must do their jobs to insure that safety for everybody on the set. That is their job.

It is not quite the same as live fire range safety rules.

Actors are assumed to be chimpanzees and must be closely supervised around any weapons. The system is setup to do that. It is the responsibility of the producers to make sure that system is in place and enforced. The system works when it is used.

Wait a minute. Baldwin was the actor and the producer. I am getting a sense of what caused the problem here.

If the gun had been suppressed they would have kept the affair quiet and out of the news.

She probably knows more than half the armorers around.

Not if she allowed target practice with live ammo during down time, as has been reported.

She doesn’t live on the set...and we don’t know how much is true. So far, we know nothing...We don’t even know what the gun model is. And we don’t know how much time there was between the gun handoff and the shot. We do know he was practicing his “quick draw”...did he say “bang” too??
