Saw it last night. It didn’t live up to the hype. If you can tell me what it’s about after seeing it, you’re better than me.

I saw it. It beats the hell out of the original Dune movie. They actually put some money into it. The special effects are modern and up to date, and realistic looking.

The casting is good, except for they made Liet-Kynes a black woman. WTF?

The acting was good. They followed the book well. Its only part one and ends with Paul and Jessica arriving at Stilgar's sietch. No telling when part 2 is due. Blah.

Don't spend money at the theater. Watch it in the comfort of your own home on your flat screen with theater sound, like I did. HBOMax.

Dune fans will love it.

#2ThumbsUp

Thanks for letting us know this is only Part 1.

That is miserable when they do that....I will wait until after Part 2 is out—and then watch both.

I've seen it. I'd give it a B/B-.

Marginally better than the David Lynch movie, but that's not saying much.

I'm starting to think that the Frank Herbert book just wasn't so hot.

Not sure how many parts there will be. I guess they could finish it off in two parts, but one never knows.

Might be a long wait, too.

No, the Dune series is some of the best science fiction ever written. The two sequels to Dune sucked, but the prequels and subsequent sequels were most excellent.

Dune is a masterpiece.

Part 1 or first half of the short novel. Other reviews have said CGI what you’d expect and story is meh.

I saw the original on HBO back in the 1980s. Never could quite get it together till I saw it several times.

When it was first shown on commercial TV, they had made a 15 minute Prologue to get people who had never read the story up to speed about what the story was about.

When you have to explain a movie before you watch it, just to understand it, means it is not worth watching.

I finally read Dune and didn’t finish it. I think poor writing for a lot of teenagers who’d never seen anything else. Walked out on the first movie towards the end and I’ve never done that with any other movie.
Will watch this new one. Yeah the Dune story just isn’t that special in 2021.
Everybody needs that spice and he’s telepathic or something and by the time you get to his sister or whatever she is who cares.

Like “2001 A Space Odyssey” , the movie made no sense unless you had already read the book.

I agree with your take.

It is the job of the script-writer to take complex ideas and make them comprehensible on the screen--sometimes that requires outstanding skill and creativity, especially with science fiction.

One example of taking an amazingly complex story and working it to make it enjoyable on the screen (without compromising on the key themes):

Science fiction short story classic:

Ted Chiang's "The Story of Your Life"

Turned into a wonderful (way below the radar) movie:

"Arrival" was made in 2016.

I was stunned and amazed by Chiang's short story, and the movie brought it to the screen with subtle and beautiful special effects. If I hadn't seen it I would not have believed it was possible.

I believe this version was easier to understand. Now I have to wait while thye film another movie to see how it ends, but since I read the book too, I already know.

MY take is that they followed the book and I liked the book so I like the movie. The effects are good.
