Saw it last night. It didn’t live up to the hype. If you can tell me what it’s about after seeing it, you’re better than me.

I saw the original on HBO back in the 1980s. Never could quite get it together till I saw it several times.

When it was first shown on commercial TV, they had made a 15 minute Prologue to get people who had never read the story up to speed about what the story was about.

When you have to explain a movie before you watch it, just to understand it, means it is not worth watching.

I thought it was great. They don’t seem to be trying to make it some kind of social justice reboot so it’s got that going for it.

Most sci-fi novels don't translated well to movies. A good example is anything Asimov wtote. How do you screw up “Nightfall?”

on the other hahd, some stuff Heinlein wrote will translate well IF it features rayguns, bug eyed monsters and heaving bosoms. Too bad there were no pre-code movies from Heinlein, which would required time travel anyway.

The same was true for the first one they tried.

Some otherwise great novels are not filmable because of length, the importance of interior monologues and abstract ideas, or an overabundance of characters and storylines. Dune has all those impediments to effective film making, which are integral to its greatness as a novel.

I find it hard to imagine anyone who hasn’t read the novel at least once being able to follow a filmed version that faithfully followed the plot line, much less enjoying the movie. Except maybe for the visual effects. Herbert created a complex universe with thousands of years of pre-history, ruled by an imperial family and noble houses, plus several distinct groups all vying for power. The Bene Geserit “witches” or the desert Fremen alone could support their own novels or films.

Disagree. Casting was spot on. Story well written. Looking forward to part two.

So about the same as the David Lynch version LOL.

I saw the preview for it this morning. Looked like something I wouldn't watch.
