Like many who collect and assimilate an ecclectic mix of music for listening throughout the day, I long ago chose to include "Polk Salad Annie" by Tony Joe White in my ever-shuffled audio from Brian Eno to Jerry Mathers, with classical, jazz, and rock in between.
A month or two ago it crossed my mind to see if Tony Joe White had any live performances worth checking out. This evening there was time and opportunity, and what an eye opener it has been!
Below I will post a couple links to his live performance of 1980 in Austin, TX. For now, though, this rendition of "Rainy Night in Georgia" [linked above - a song he wrote] carries well his ability not only to craft a great song, but to perform it in such soulful fashion as to elevate the hearer in a fine way.
I had no idea how prolific he was or how longstanding his career. Someone commented that Mark Knopfler looked to him as an inspiration. The live videos certainly bear witness to uncanny skill when it comes to tone and execution.
Last time I posted about older music it was Buddy Miles. It just amazes me, and gives cause for thanks, that so much great recorded music has come about in my lifetime.
TOPICS: Miscellaneous; Music/Entertainment
KEYWORDS: louisiana; soul
I hope you enjoy this music, especially since times are testy and we need a rest.

When did. ‘poke’ become ‘polk’?

I loved that song - Polk Salad Annie - when I was a kid. I remembered it a few years ago and found the live recording of him online, YouTube of course. Better than I remembered. I too did not realize what a strong career he had.

When did. ‘poke’ become ‘polk’? Probably around the time James Polk moved into the White House.

When did. “poke” become “polk?”
Some time after “polk” became “poke.”

This is the first live Tony Joe White I looked into. The instrumentation lends itself to simplicity, and the groove cannot help but get the mind and body moving:

I was shocked, at least mildly, how different this is from “Polk Salad.”

My question precisely. It’s always been poke weed where I grew up.

Ha! If you ever heard it you’d know why it didn’t make the charts.
