LAKELAND, Fla. – On Tuesday morning, deputies from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man on a New Jersey warrant for murder, kidnapping, carjacking, and weapons charges.
51-year old James Lewis was taken into custody at a home at 220 Kinghill Court SE in Winter Haven.
According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, Lewis fatally shot a man on September 18, 2021 in East Orange, New Jersey during a carjacking. He then zip-tied the victim’s girlfriend and stole the vehicle with her in it, before crashing a short time later.
James Lewis was previously convicted for homicide in a 1989 case in which he was also convicted for robbery and possession of a weapon. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison, but only served 30 years in combined jail and prison time.
“He spent only 30 years in prison when he was sentenced to 40 years in prison for homicide, robbery, and possession of a weapon,” said Grady Judd, the Polk County Sheriff. “In less than two years of being released early, he murdered again. The reason we have prisons is to keep violent and repeat criminals away from victims and innocent people in the community.”
Following Lewis’ arrest Tuesday, a search warrant was served at the residence where he was arrested, and evidence linked to the East Orange investigation was recovered.

I don’t support prison for murderers. It’s supposed to be humane, because — you never know — they could be innocent, and it would be just awful to have an innocent man die needlessly.
Well, have a look. The guy murdered in 1989, and here we have an innocent man die needlessly. If they had executed the guilty guy, no more innocent lives would have been lost.
I support the death penalty and broad use of it.
Of all the places to go, this dude should’ve known better than coming to Grady Judd’s county.
The monster should go straight to the electric chair for execution.
Also for prosecutors who send an innocent man to their death, and any ‘witnesses’ who lie to send someone to jail.
I am surprised he was even sentenced to 40 years let alone served 30. Usually you see a 5-10 year sentence.
Kingshill Ct is a nice neighborhood near Legoland, not one normally associated with violent criminals.
Reminds me of an old joke from sixty years ago.
James Lewis! Get away from that wheelbarrow! You know you know nothing about mo-chinery!

Agree, but per the Left and many GUILT-RIDDEN conservatives, it is better to have 100 murderers on the loose killing others, than have the state possibly execute the wrong person (although almost always a person with a less-than-stellar criminal history, anyway).
Sheriff grady judd. Lol.
My daughter worked for sonic. Store was robbed 5x within a few months.. she quit. Robberies were all at gunpoint. Sonic DID NOTHING TO PROTECT THESE KIDS. When the druggie needed money they sloshed across the parking lot and held them up. Word got out. Manager refused to give tapes to police. My daughter pulled them. Yep near Legoland. Cesspool of drugs. I sold my house and lost my a$$ just to get out. 2013.
What was that line about lips that look like Michelin tires?
Not quite the same as Willie Horton (paroled), but it rhymes, so to speak.
This atrocity is indicative of an UNCIVILIZED society, because any TRULY civilized society would have hanged this murderer within days following conviction for his first murder.
