What? You expected us not to make a juvenile joke in the headline of this story? Listen, most of us around here are still amused by bodily functions, so this shouldn’t be unexpected. What was unexpected for a Halton Police officer earlier this week was a contractor who failed to tightly secure the trailer hitch ball on their truck’s drawbar.
According to a video posted to Twitter by the attending officer, the truck and trailer in question were bounding along Dundas Street when the gendarmes spotted something amiss at the hitching point. Closer inspection revealed the ball on which the loaded trailer’s tongue was resting did not get a good tightening at last inspection, an oversight which could certainly lead to calamity.
The officer also goes on to complain about the state of this trailer’s safety chains, though the links shown in the video seem ok at first glance. Nevertheless, problems like that are sometimes only obvious when viewed in person. There is an alarming amount of play in the trailer hitch ball, however, a fact shown by the cop when he spins the ball freely on its drawbar.
It should go without saying that a walk-around check should be the last thing every driver does before they set off with a trailer in tow. This goes double when said trailer is extremely heavy, as this contractor’s hauler surely was since it was laden with dozens of heavy shingle bundles — those weigh about 70 pounds each, in case you were unaware. At least it seems this load was evenly distributed aboard the trailer and not too far back on the hauler’s tail.
Be safe out there, folks. And heed the advice of Halton Police — check your balls.
Transgendered will be offended..................
and don’t forget to grease your ball from time to time.
Clean it too, we don’t need people running around with dirty balls.
Cue up the AC/DC....
protecting it with a little bag might be a good idea
I always ask the wife to polish mine...
Truckers are used to this.
Long time saying “Old truckers never die, they just get a new Peterbilt.”
Funny, yes and no. There’s a series of trailer safety videos on YouTube. One discusses a uhaul coming loose striking and killing a man working in front of his business. Balls, dead man brakes, and safety chains are life savers.
Ya know, I never knew I had to check my balls. I’m very conscientious about trailering but I never knew there could be a problem with my ball UNTIL my trailer got separated from the ball!
If properly tightened they never come loose. Especially after the rust takes hold. At least none of mine ever have.
This is an actual alert to IBM Field Engineers that went out to all IBM Branch Offices. The person who wrote it was very serious. The rest of us find it rather funny.
Abstract: Mouse Balls Available as FRU (Field Replacement Unit)
Mouse balls are now available as FRU. Therefore, if a mouse fails to operate or should it perform erratically, it may need a ball replacement. Because of the delicate nature of this procedure, replacement of mouse balls should only be attempted by properly trained personnel.
Before proceeding, determine the type of mouse balls by examining the underside of the mouse. Domestic balls will be larger and harder than foreign balls. Ball removal procedures differ depending upon manufacturer of the mouse. Foreign balls can be replaced using the pop-off method. Domestic balls are replaced using the twist-off method. Mouse balls are not usually static sensitive. However, excessive handling can result in sudden discharge. Upon completion of ball replacement, the mouse may be used immediately.
It is recommended that each replacer have a pair of spare balls for maintaining optimum customer satisfaction, and that any customer missing his balls should suspect local personnel of removing these necessary items.
To re-order, specify one of the following:
P/N 33F8462 - Domestic Mouse Balls
P/N 33F8461 - Foreign Mouse Balls
Ya know, its a Highway to Hell, but a Stairway to Heaven
That should give you a pretty good idea of the expected relative traffic loads...
Hi. Great post.
Trailer balls. And assorted hitches.
A nuber of types and sizes of balls.
For example, boat trailer balls.
Large camper balls.
And the lawn maintenance trailer balls. They’re a little smaller.
If you are pulling a load, you better have the right balls to do it.
5.56mm
LOL! I’ve seen that before!
I kind of love truck stops.
Even the coffee is chock full of nuts.
