Death of Nigel and Carol: Traditional names like Gordon, Stuart, Sally, Sue and even Jonathan fall out of fashion in 2020... but popular Eastern Europe names beginning with K are on the rise

Traditional names such as Nigel and Carol are dying out in England and Wales amid a rise in popular Eastern European names beginning with K, official data has shown.

Nigel and Carol could now be officially extinct as names for new-borns, while Jonathan, Gordon, Sally and Sue are also falling out of favour, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The ONS only records data where three or more children have been called a single name, meaning no more than a maximum of two babies were named Nigel or Carol in 2020.

The downturn in usage is understood to be caused by younger mothers opting for more modern and shortened names, while mums aged over 35 and older tend to go for more traditional names.

LOL!!

Mr K and I have an imaginary child that we purchased from some imaginary drug addicts on a beach in CA. His name is Baldur. He’s only seven years old at this point but already taking college courses and has 350,202,000 followers on his Instagram account.

Names beginning with a K, originating from Eastern Europe, have seen a rise in usage with more named Kal (seven), Kaidan (eight), and Kyree (six) than Keith or Piers in 2020.

Those aren't Eastern European names. That would be names like "Kasia" or "Krystyna" or "Katarina".

For centuries, John was far and away the most popular name in the English-speaking world, if not the whole Christian world. And Mary was the most popular girl’s name. However, those names didn’t make the lists—except for Jack, a nickname for John, Molly, a nickname for Mary, and the variant Maria.

Funny that the Daily Wail is calling Arabic names (e.g. Kaidan) “originating from Eastern Europe”.

And Kyree is Greek (from “Kyrios”).

Jack can either be considered a diminutive of John (from Hebrew Yohanan) or Jacob (from Hebrew Ya’akov).

Mary of course (as well as Marie, Maria, Molly et al) is derived from Hebrew Miriam.

How about "Kursk"? A good "anti-fascist" name for any young Antifa/anarchist types who are thinking about settling down & raising a family...

Indeed, if you want to raise your kids to be fully woke fighters for equity, social justice and sustainability and against right-wing extremism, whiteness, toxic masculinity, etc., give them good anti-fascist names--Katyn for a boy and Kolyma for a girl.

And note all the variations of “Mohammad” on the list.

“Imagine having the initials ‘KKK’”

I had a friend with those initials. Her mother thought her name sounded great and the Klan thing never occurred to her. My friend was a bit annoyed by it, but not enough to change her name.

My Welsh dictionary only has a K to support the borrowed words kilogram and kilometr. In the native language, the letter C always carries the K sound, so K is superfluous. The letter J is also full of borrowed words and has about 10 entries.

I'm studying many languages right now and a copy of "IPA Made Easy" is coming from Amazon shortly. There are some unusual constructs in Scots Gaelic that would be more clearly expressed in IPA notation. When dabbling with Russian, I found learning Cyrillic is helpful as many of the unique sounds in Russian map directly to a Cyrillic symbol, but are only approximated with multiple Latin letters.

My first name (Roland) never appears on any of these lists. There aren’t any mini license plates for sale at Stuckey’s with my name printed on them.

Poor Karens...all the good ones lumped in with the bad ones.

I don't know how this "Karen" thing started. I had a high school girlfriend named Karen. She was a bright, optimistic charming girl and is now a bright, optimistic charming woman.

Decades ago "Bruce" was used to denigrate someone as effeminate. This was popularized on Johnny Carson. Parents of a son named Bruce wrote him a letter explaining the difficulties it caused their young boy. Johnny stopped. I'd like to see "Karen" similarly retired.

I feel it is unfortunate for people named Karen, even if it is a joke.

I generally don’t use it, except in references like this.
