WASHINGTON, Monday, Oct. 14.
There is no excitement along the lines to-day. Following this will be found all the items of interest.
I am satisfied that for the present, at least, our troops will remain where they are -- not moving forward nor falling back, but quietly awaiting the action of the rebels. I was all along the lines today, all the way from the out posts near Lewinsville down to HEINTZELMA's on the extreme left, and with all my capacity at pumping, there was no extracting an item worth telegraphing.
The weather hero is extremely cold, the thermometer ranging down so low that there was a heavy white frost this morning.
The outposts on the left of our line have been extended to the mouth of Little Hunting Creed, six miles below Alexandria. Thence they skirt around the Mount Vernon estate, touching the upper part of Dougue Run, cross the Orange and Alexandria Railroad, and run north to Edsall's Hill. Frequently in the daytime, our pickets press went to Springfield Station, but they are drawn in at sight. The rebel pickets are occasionally in eight, but no recent attempts at picket shooting have transpired until Saturday night, when two companies of Alabamians commenced firing upon our men. The firing was quickly returned, and after a few discharges they drove back our pickets to the east of Edsall's Hill.
On Saturday, a portion of the second Pennsylvania Cavalry ,while out scouting beyond outlines below Mount Vernon near Accotank Run, were surprised by a superior force of rebel cavalry, who fired upon them but without effect. Our men at once fell back to our lines.
