On October 12 there was a naval engagement at Head of the Passes, near New Orleans, Confederate victory -- "Mosquito fleet" river-born fire rafts panicked Union blockading ships, some damaged in their flight, no casualties.

It was the war's 56th engagement, the first in Louisiana, increasing Confederate victories to 28 vs. 21 Union victories.
