Massachusetts health officials on Tuesday reported nearly 4,000 new breakthrough cases over the past week, and 46 more deaths.
In the last week, 3,741 new breakthrough cases -- infections in people who have been vaccinated -- were reported, with 125 more vaccinated people hospitalized, Massachusetts Department of Public Health officials said Tuesday. Their report brings the total number of breakthrough cases to 40,464, and the death toll among people with breakthrough infections to 300.

That's about the size of it, and it's hardly clear that a "booster" that consists of a third dose of an mRNA vaccine that produces antibodies tailored to respond to a portion of the spike protein of the original Wuhan strain of SARS-COV-2 (which strain is essentially now extinct) is going to be particularly effective against the variant now in circulation.
As it is, I take some interest in an apples-to-apples comparison of CDC data that shows that the number of deaths involving COVID in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts last month (i.e., September 2021) was some 192% higher than the number of deaths in Massachusetts involving COVID in September 2020 (at which time, of course, no one had been vaccinated). Now, we're talking about generally small numbers in absolute terms (which accounts, I suppose, for the eye-popping nature of the percentage increase): 101 deaths in September 2020 v. 295 deaths in September 2021.
And, presumably, at least part of the explanation for why deaths involving COVID should be higher last month than a year ago at that same time is that the "lockdown" in Massachusetts has become less stringent over the course of the year. But, as to that, one might reasonably presume -- and "presume" is all I can do, as I don't live in Massachusetts and cannot provide even an anecdotal assessment of things there -- that the stringency of the "lockdown" was less in, say, June 2021 than June 2020. But what we see when we compare the number of deaths involving COVID in those two months is that there was an 87% decrease in such deaths in June 2021 (i.e., 83 deaths in June 2021 v. 636 deaths in June 2020).
This, to my eye, is at least suggestive of waning efficacy of the vaccines from June 2021 until the present time. It will be interesting to see what the final numbers for the current month reveal.
