THE GREAT REBELLION: Advance of Gen. McCall’s Division Across the Potomac; IMPORTANT FROM MISSOURI; Verification of the Report of Price’s Movement Southward (10/11/1861)

WASHINGTON, Thursday, Oct. 10.

The following is the report of the sick in the hospitals on the 4th inst., as officially reported: E-street Hospital, 104; Seminary, 176; Union, 178; Columbian, 209; General, 58; Alexandria, 186; total, 911. This is a slight increase over the last week, but yet a very low total of sick in hospitals considering the large number of men in the camps.

The terrific repulse of the rebels by the gun-boat Monticello, and the successful retreat of the Twentieth Indiana, is the theme of the day in the Department corridors and the lobbies of the hotels. It was heard of in the camps this afternoon, and gave great enthusiasm to the troops. These tidings make our men impatient under the restraint imposed upon them of watching a retreating enemy, and increases the anxiety now everywhere manifest that we shall decimate the rebel Army of the Potomac, and not permit it to wither away into a thousand fragments, while our hosts stand in our trenches without so much as firing a round or making one charge.

It it said that Capt. AVERILL, of the Provost Guard, is to be put in command of what has heretofore been known as the Kentucky Cavalry, but which now is credited to Pennsylvania, the State in which it was recruited.

Much indignation is being expressed here at the refusal of the Bank of Washington to receive the United States Treasury Notes at par. This institution has for some months refused to redeem its own notes in specie. Unless the Bank change its policy, it will be stripped of all its business, and stand a very good chance of having its deposits removed in a summary manner.

Two days ago, October 9, 1861, there was a Confederate attack on Union troops at Santa Rosa Island, Fort Pickens, Pensacola, Florida, an outnumbered Union victory:

It was the war's 55th engagement, the first in Florida, resulting in 238 total casualties including 44 deaths.
That brings the war's total casualties over 15,500 including nearly 2,000 deaths.

Of 55 total battles-engagements, 35 were in five Union states & territories, 20 in four Confederate states.
The Union won 22 engagements, Confederates won 26, 7 inconclusive.

Last page includes “News from Cape Girardeau” - kinda sad that our main connection to news and Cape Girardeau has been gone for almost a year.
