Three decades ago, when I was still living in my birth city of New York — where no one gives a second thought to jaywalking — I was visiting Los Angeles and walking downtown. I did something I had always done at home: cross the street on a “don’t walk” sign.
An officer stopped me and asked to see my ID. I asked what for. He said I walked on a “don’t walk” signal and wrote me a ticket. At first I thought this was a joke.
The cop claimed he was from New York too and said the reason I never got stopped at home was because police there didn’t enforce pedestrian laws. He didn’t have a care in the world and seemed so proud to write me up.

The fine was only $20, but it made me feel like a criminal. I was insulted, and my attitude about cops in general would never be positive again.

The cop probably recognized him to be a LIBERAL from NY, so his views of cops never changed.

I got pulled over once for tooting at the guy in front of me I tooted and the next second a siren blasted right behind me The cop let me off with a warning since I was from another state
I jaywalk quite often. Not saying this in an absolute way but most times it forces me to be more careful and thus safer than if I was crossing at a crosswalk or corner.

Number one place for pedestrian fatalities - crosswalks.
And most of the deceased have the right of way when they were killed.

Well since it’s so common to kill pedestrians, according to the author, that shouldn’t be a crime.

If the author was from New York, getting a non traffic related ticket in LA, before the advent of computerized tracking systems, he should have drawn a representation of male genitalia on the ticket and mailed it in, with an invitation for the LAPD to do the impossible.
LOL, I received a similar ticket 30 years ago in LA too. I had plenty of time on my hands, so I contested it. On court day, the co, and prosecutor showed up. The cop had a nicely printed diagram of the intersection. They presented their case to the judge. When the judge turned to me, I said that I had nothing to say. He gave me a suspended sentance and said that as long as I don’t get ticketed again, I was good to go - no fine.
The land of the absurd.
When I cross the street I look both ways even on a one-way street. Because Atlanta.
They tried to ticket me for this once but after spending 10 minutes convincing the cop I was NOT JAY he gave up. And I see no crime against LEO-walking.
I grew up in SoCal and I remember jaywalking always being taken seriously. Perhaps it was the fact that the pedestrian pretty much had the right of way and if a driver hit him, it was considered the driver’s fault. You can see this every day in California. Pedestrians deliberately don’t look to see if traffic is headed their way.
When I moved to the Midwest, it was different and most pedestrians actually look to see what might be coming to kill them.
Then there’s crossing the street in Mexico. Darwin is in charge of their traffic laws.
Too many people from New York ruined Los Angeles.
20 bucks was a lot of money back when Gates was police chief here in LA.
I cross where I need to. I don’t walk an extra two thirds of a block to get to a crosswalk. I do so in such a way as to not inconvenience any drivers or make them think they might have to dodge. I have very good distance/motion perception and when I was younger and my legs more reliable, I would cross busy highways.
