Weekly Garden Thread - October 2-8, 2021
October 2, 2021 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Many years ago we came home from church to find all 5 of our dairy goats in the yard outside the barn and their pen. Evidently they figured out how to release the locking hook from the gate. Had to use that and a bungee after that.

And since gardening is exercise,

Exercise may stop cancer in its tracks

Forget bedrest, research from Edith Cowan University (ECU) has shown exercise may be a key weapon in cancer patients' battle against the disease. Exercise causes muscles to secrete proteins called myokines into our blood—and researchers from ECU's Exercise Medicine Research Institute have learned these myokines can suppress tumor growth and even help actively fight cancerous cell

It’s still too warm here. Going to be 80 this weekend. Uncle! I. Want. Fall! (And NOW it’s raining - hasn’t rained ALL summer!)

Waiting for a string of dry, cooler days to pull more spent tomato plants and get garlic and spring bulbs planted. The puppies did a number on one of my garden beds and dug up my Allium and my FAVORITE tulip bulbs; I salvaged a few, and have replacements on order from Jung’s - BUT shipping from Holland has been delayed. :(

Goats are SO smart. Good thing they don’t have opposable thumbs or we’d ALL be in trouble, LOL!

I wasn’t planning on getting all the garlic done today, but decided to push through it get it done anyways.

So I planted 48 Romanian Red, 42 Music, and 24 Great Northern White.

Now I need to fill in the raised bed a little to get the depth right and then mulch it.

I’m going to try shredded up leaves more than straw this year. Straw in NY was a good deal. Straw in NH is ridiculously expensive.

But we had LOTS of leaves.

PawPaw; Variety Sunflower is supposed by some to be self fertile and does not require 2 pawpaws to germinate

However! https://www.houzz.com/discussions/1856630/is-the-sunflower-paw-paw-self-fertile-and-other-q-s

Very cool! Thanks!

So far I have had zero luck finding any paw-paws at my local small independent markets. I haven’t made it to the weekend Farmer’s Market yet, but if it’s still going in, this should be the last weekend that we have one.

I may have to venture into the big city farmer’s market. Or someone can send me one if they have any left over. I’ll pay if that’s even feasible.

I planted garlic too. Mulching tomorrow with cypress mulch. It worked great for us last year.

Garlic is a great crop. Easy to grow and low maintenance and virtually nothing bothers it.
