An Illinois man died this month in the state's first human case of rabies since 1954, according to health officials on Tuesday.

The Lake County man, in his 80s, awoke in mid-August to find a bat on his neck...

The bat was captured and tested positive for rabies, but when health officials told the man he needed to start post-exposure rabies treatment, he declined, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) said...

He subsequently died and a bat colony was found in his home.

Horrible death.

Hope anti-vaccine nonsense didn’t contribute. And I hope he was mentally with it enough to actually make the decision.

RIP.

Why would anyone decline treatment?

Everyone has their own weird irrational fears. Mine is getting bit by a bat unknowingly and getting rabies from it. (I spend a lot of time outside. And have been known to drift off to sleep while outside on my reclining lawn chairs). Fortunately the only thing I’ve been but by are mosquitos and a spider.

One case in 70 years? We have to vaccinate the entire state to begin with then those surrounding. Possibly needing the national guard and maybe some Federal Marshalls to help out. Of course normal basic human rights will be suspended until further notice. We must get on top of this!

We have a massive bat colony under a bridge near my house, and thousands of them fly by every sunset during much of the year. One bat turned up with rabies a few years ago, so I’m extra careful about keeping my dogs’ shots current.

I don’t think I’ll ever forget the smell. We trashed everything we found up there.

Has his death been reclassified as Covid yet?

The bats under the Congress Bridge in Austin is a major tourist attraction.

I would have to imagine the smell would be noticeable pretty early on. We have a number of bat colonies under bridges in Houston, including one a short walk from my home, and the smell is pretty powerful even 50 yards away outdoors.

Same with the Waugh Street bridge in Houston. But the one near my house in the suburbs may be nearly as large.

Even if the family wanted him to take the rabies treatment he may have still refused.

It is better to have a professional do this cleaning. They have the right hazardous materials gear.
