I’d have to wipe out half the population in NYC for my vote to begin to count. But we vote, we try.

If you are buying check the flood maps, and stay _far_ away from and high above the flood zones.

Other than that you should be good to go.

Congratulations! I left Los Angeles in 2005 after 20 years - came back the the KC area. Unfortunately, my governor is a lib as is my representative. The county is now blue but the state is still red.

What I dont understand is why you made the good decision to flee NY state, and then made a bad decision to look into Pennsylvania. I dont see any difference in the two!

This is coming from someone who used to live in NJ but now South Carolina for the last 30 years.

Well, no offense, but don’t go there and New York it up!!!
You’re leaving NY for reason, leave it there. Melt in w the locals and don’t be idiots. Sounds harsh I know. I grew up in NEPA and all the Jersey a-holes who were escaping jersey brought their ignorant jersey ways with them. I’m 55+ now and still despise em.
Good luck & congrats.

I dont believe that half the blue counties are really blue. I think there is so much fraud in the urban areas that keeps it blue, and not from 100% naturaal voting patterns.

Which part?

The two “sides” are distinctly different.

You really should stay in NY and work to fix your home state instead of fleeing like an afghan to a better place. If you are determined to live in the Ohio River Valley I suggest that you settle across the river in Ohio as nobody from WV wants a new Yorker to move in.

I grew up in the Ohio River Valley, I lived in point pleasant, parkersburg and later up in Weirton. So if you have any specific questions I might be able to answer them, I should also add that my wife is a new Yorker so I have experience with both WV and NY.

Got out of soviet Red Hampshire a few years back...figured I’d get down south before they blew the bridges over the Hudson.

People leaving bad places to make a new start is how this country got started.

Got kin about 4mi out of Parkersburg; been there for ages.

NH has high property taxes, registering a car is expensive, power failures during ice/snow storms, heat will probably be considerably higher than usual, New Yorkers and M*ssholes are everywhere. TX, MT, and MO are all better choices than Red Hampshire (although MT is pricey).

Yay!!!! Congrats!!! We have finally left NY altogether. Left a Hudson River town north of Albany and landed near Roanoke,VA because this is where the kids and grandkids are.

West Virginia is still a possible for us.
I wish you God’s blessings and all things wonderful in your new place.

So, as an American citizen in good standing I reserve the right to live where I choose. As a conservative who has had my vote cancelled out a thousand times over by NYC, there is very little that I can do to turn that around.

As a person who values freedom above all, I want to live in a state where I do actually have freedoms that were guaranteed in our US Constitution.

I have zero resemblance to any afhgan, but you will have to take my word on that.

I’m a NJ shore transplant to PA we are 25 miles north of Allentown been here for 17 years. When we sold our house in NJ we replaced it with a house twice the size, detached 2 car garage and almost 4 acres. It is very nice here but the COL is starting to creep up. At the time we moved in my mind it wasn’t a good long term real estate investment like NJ where property values double every 10-15 years but I think that might be changing as the area is growing and our place is in a quiet semi-rural area.

West Virginia. I went to Salem College (class of 1981) which is near Clarksburg in central WV. I love WV plain and simple. When you say along the Ohio River you are taking about an area that is 100s of miles. There is a cultural difference and WV has it’s fair share of neglected towns but true your money will go a lot further than eastern PA that is for sure.

Even if you are in an incorporated boro it will be different and take some time to get used to. As John Denver sings “life is old there”, this is true. Things that people in the NE take for granted may or may not be available even in the small towns like water or sewer or trash pickup, big public libraries, large police forces and well funded fire departments, well appointed park systems, immediate snow removal for example, it just depends.

As we are getting close to retirement time, about 5 years from now, I think about relocating and WV is an area of interest for me. My wife is not as much. Keep in mind that they don’t call WV the Mountain State for nothing. Unless you are willing to stay inside the home for weeks on end in the winter you will need 4 wheel drive to get around. WV is not the south, the winters there are like winters in NYS.

Even with our move from NJ to PA the locals looked at us as outsiders at first. It helped that I’m a volunteer firefighter and both or our kids were in the public school system so now 17 years we are accepted and actually somewhat well known and this is something that has to be considered no matter where when you relocate. WV has a well deserved reputation for being somewhat clannish but overall WV is friendly just do as the locals do don’t trry to make it a mini-NY.

Anywhere you go leaving NY the gun laws will be better. WV is on a par with PA as far as guns are concerned you should be able to get a carry permit which is nice just find a gun club and shoot often. PA allows fireworks, in the towns there local laws restricting use we are in the country no restrictions but it is a big giant pain in the ass when neighbors are lighting them off all night long. Same with shooting guns on their properties but if you are in town that will not be an issue, guns or fireworks.

Overall WV if you like small town or rural is fantastic as long as your neighbors keep up their properties. The only big glaring problem that cannot fixed is the winter weather. Good Move!
