Central terminal, aerial trams and new bridges: Pittsburgh unveils ambitious long-term transportation blueprint
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | September 24, 2021 | Ed Blazina

Posted on 09/28/2021 9:54:10 AM PDT by Tolerance Sucks Rocks

Picture Pittsburgh 50 years from now with these transportation changes: a terminal in a central location to handle a hyperloop system, vehicles for vertical takeoffs and landings, and high-speed trains; aerial trams linking neighborhoods; and new bridges crossing the Monongahela River at Hazelwood for motorized vehicles and at the former Wabash rail bridge piers for bikes and pedestrians.

Those might sound like something from a science fiction novel, but they are among the ideas the city says it must consider in a 50-year Mobility Vision Plan released Thursday by Mayor Bill Peduto and Karina Ricks, director of the city’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure.

“It may be tempting to dismiss the 2070 Mobility Vision Plan as fantastical or audacious,” Ms. Ricks said during a news conference in the Strip District, “but that would be a mistake. Fifty years is a long time, and a lot will change. Look back at how much has changed over the last 50.

“It is critical we have a plan to guide us.”

The plan has been under development for more than three years and is designed to dovetail with a Downtown Mobility Plan released in May by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, a regional long-range plan unveiled last year by the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission and Port Authority's 25-year NEXTransit plan expected to be approved Friday.

The city’s document “brings all of those plans together,” said Ms. Ricks, who’s leaving the city after Friday for a job with the Federal Transit Administration.

A key need in the future could be a multimodal terminal somewhere near the Golden Triangle, which could host stations for potential hyperloop, high-speed train, vertical vehicles and aerial tram systems.

A 2070 Mobility Vision Plan? I wish those folks would be more forward-thinking! I want to know what Pittsburgh will be like the year 2525. Will it be anything like the song?

"Picture Pittsburgh 50 years from now with these transportation changes"

...and the bill comes due, with interest. De-industrialized Pittsburgh, with its middle class long gone, and its mostly illegal alien under-educated underclass, failing to integrate into the economy in any real way other than floor sweeping and burger flipping, will default. This is what we all have to look forward to, if we simple roll over on our backs and accept totalitarianism. Not much.

I expect more piracy than steel to be involved.

Please..

Pittsburgh will get none of this in the next 50 years except maybe more bike lanes from whackadoo mayors causing even more gridlock…

PORT AUTHORiTY has had huge plans to extend the subway north and west since the day it opened, and what’s it actually done? Barely service if any at all left on one of the lines they built.

Talk of a maglev to the airport for decades…

Blah blah blah

Waste of taxpayers time and money for a photo op for Chester the Molester mayor

Yes the “other” sports team... owned by the only legally federal sanctioned sports monopoly... baseball. Federal judges can own a team.

EGGSACTLY!!!! Colossal waste of money to even come up with this plan, and another waste that this position and department even exist in the city.

Skybus.

You have to be at least 57 like me to remember it.

The original liberal mass transit debacle in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh is the only major city without an interstate highway beltway around its perimeter to ease the traffic burden of the 18th century goat paths that cause the average speed for most trips around western Pennsylvania to be at 30mph or less.

Before we move on to the 22nd century, it would be nice if they gave us the 20th century conveniences the rest of the country benefits from first.

No, they are science fiction with the emphasis on fiction.

Pittsburgh traffic and infrastructure has always been horrible. The terrain and layout of the city don't help but intransigence, sloth, corruption and the other usual deadly sins have hamstrung it for decades as locals shrug and face gridlock every day.

Peduto is an overgrown hippie who though that adding bike lanes and taking away traffic lanes on narrow streets would somehow convince people who live in a very hilly area to ride bicycles like Chinese peasants.

These 'plans' are invariably a load of Jetsons-cartoon rubbish meant to paper over the cracks of a current government that is incompetent and venal while they pretend to be visionaries about a time when they will all be deceased.

For many years, I lived in a nice area of the City of Pittsburgh. The last few years at least, they couldn’t even plow the streets of snow properly. Rats running loose, bums and homeless accosting people. The City has gone downhill the last 10-20 years.

This plan was needed to tie into the three OTHER collosal wastes of money.

Hell, they don’t even fix the potholes.

And Skybus was a giant failure.

They fought tooth and nail to keep you from working in the 'burbs. They wanted everyone "dahntahn". I'll give them SOME break that the topography and existing suburbs made an inner beltway difficult, but a beltway further out was always feasible.
