How may people do you know who are active members or just attendees in church or Temple anymore? (I don't know too many).
What percentage of babies are baptized any more? (baptism rates are declining, out-of-wedlock births are soaring).
How many kids do you know go to Sunday School.....or take confirmation lessons or Bible study classes?.....(my TWO years of 1-hour confirmation/Bible classes were held at my church 2 days a week after I left my public school at 4 PM.)
If young people today get no moral guidance from church-going or from Bible classes or from responsible parents, is it any wonder that Gabby and/or other rudderless young men and women in this country fall easy prey to amoral emotions that can lead to a bad and often-premature or tragic ending to their lives?

Many abuse victims keep it secret while the abuser plays the wonderful most nicest person in the world role to the public.

People from his school days said he was “different” and their just friends relationship was dramatic and constantly on and off.

The author is wrong. The 911 caller told dispatch he was the one hitting and slapping her. Moab police admitted the circumstances were reported to the traffic stop cops. Notice in the video the bearded cop ruled over the other cops and he was wanting to arrest Gabby except that involved too much paperwork.
IRRC, he was also the cop who was laughing with Brian about his crazy ex needing meds.

Some surmises
Millennials are in the process of redefining sexual relationships.
This process started in the mid 1960s with the advent of the pill.
There probably is no return to traditional marriage in the 1950s sense so there is no point in feeling morally superior mourning its loss.
Subtracting sex from consideration, what went wrong?
I believe it might have been financial pressure on the couple as a unit.
The last public sighting was at a restaurant. The argument was with a restaurant server from Brian, about money.
The dynamic could easily have been that brighter gabby nor Brian have a stable income. In fact both are subsidized by their parents. Yet they play act in public and online as independent, happy and financially prosperous.
This is a big lie.
Big lies require big effort to maintain, and even bigger effort to maintain to the general online public.
In this scenario, a de facto income flow from one set of parents can become a weapon in a millennial fluid relationship.
For example gabby can threaten Brian with the prospect of walking home without money if he fails to (fill in the blank).
Brian is in a very exposed position. As a man he is supposed to provide at least some income, yet he has little or no income at the moment (apparently his parents do not contribute much to the journeys costs). Gabby being attractive can replace him in the blink of an eye if she chooses and Brian must be constantly aware of that. Plus she can publish a story to the world that will embarrass him to the world. The story does not even need to be 100% true. He is way out on a limb in many ways.
Maybe it starts with a small argument. We should go to this campground not that one. Or why don’t you go to the grocery store today instead of me. Or do the dishes. Etc
The argument is the last in a long string of minor arguments ending in near MAD escalation, MAD being the m (money) argument wielded by gabby.
At some point MAD is triggered. Given the soft unstable financial foundation of the relationship, it maybe escalated beyond finances at some point.
A millennial relationship frequently means no permanent commitment. Either party can call off th relationship at any moment in time, even during a van trip thousands of miles from home.
There used to be a high school course in the 1969s called home economics. Only girls needed to take it. What was taught? Is it still taught? Is it still taught? For girls only?
My sense is that at least some of the relationship/marriage topics were informally discussed in home economics classes or in after school one on one sessions between teachers and students.
Nowadays we have lifestyle counselors. However, it is regarded as an option, might cost money, and they only get involved after problems surface— not generally before (my sense). Additionally, seemingly anyone can hang up a shingle as a lifestyle counselor. Sometimes it seems as if there is no formal training— just the school of hard knocks (eg divorce, abortion, etc— the type of debris left in the wake of millenial style relationships that one might expect). Did gabby need a home Ec course? Did she take one in high school or college? Did she need a lifestyle coach? If so did she have one?
At one point in the recent past unmarried white women were the highest recipients of welfare. Is this still true?
Did Brian give up a job to go with gabby? Was there a compact in lieu of marriage? I still think there is much more to know before we can completely understand their relationship.

Nature boy won’t do well not feeling the grass between his toes for the next 20 years. He won’t be so preachy after a week’s time. Ha, he’ll be eating off plastic trays with plastic sporks. Please, don’t let him be gator food.
They can’t disallow it but there are plenty of other things they could do and be proactive about, or at least to expose the risk.
