The volcanic eruption on the island of La Palma has been ongoing for nearly a week and has forced thousands to flee and destroyed hundreds of properties due to its massive lava flow. However, as photos show, at least one property miraculously remains standing.
A miraculous sight was photographed on the Spanish island of El Palma where the Cumbre Vieja volcano has been erupting and spewing lava for nearly a week. Hundreds of homes were devoured by the fast-flowing lava, but somehow, some way, at least one was left standing all by its lonesome.
Ada Monnikendam, who built the house with her husband, was amazed when she saw the photo of the home encircled by lava circulating on social media this week, according to the Spanish newspaper El Mundo. "I know that house! My husband and I built it!" she said. The property is reportedly owned by a retired couple in Demark, who have owned the villa for decades but have been away from the island for more than a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The couple expressed relief when informed by Ada that their house was still standing.
"We all started crying like crazy when I told them that their beloved house was intact," Ada told El Mundo. "They told me, 'Even though we can't go now, we're relieved that it's still standing. We'll enjoy it in a while ... or we'll leave it to our three children.'"

Years ago, when I lived in LA, there was a huge fire up in the hills, every expensive house and barn burned to the ground except one 40-acre place owned by a woman who saved wild horses. Pretty miraculous. I learned decades later that every day since she had purchased the property, she walked around it reading Bible verses outloud, asking God to protect her.
Really made me cry, it was so lovely.
Probably didn’t have Homeowners, so they couldn’t afford to have it fried.
“Probably would have been better to have it destroyed and get the insurance payout for a total loss.”
Yea, access by helicopter, only, won’t be easy.
“Quiet neighborhood, but pizza delivery is going to be a b*tch...”
Drones can take care of that. But getting there and back will be sporty.
Flare gun and burn it down. I’m really not sure it matters. From an insurance perspective it’s unusable. Then again insurance agencies are complete douche bags. Everyone who works for them are crooks.
Good drainage.
The house has been spared. Good for it. Still, the Canary Islands are now off my list of possible destinations to flee to in order to get away from the Covid madness sweeping the USA. Bummer.
Chart does not account for rain cooling (a bigger factor) as it just addresses radiant cooling and I did say 200C in a year. Surrounding depth does not look meters. 1/2 meter or so to perhaps a meter. Still a massive thermal mass. Either way... very very toasty. Serious in floor radiant heating. ;-)
What shocked me is the trees around the house are still green. Weird to say the least.
It's a hot neighborhood... really hot.
