Americans are misinformed about the risks of COVID. That’s a fact.

Earlier this year, a Franklin Templeton/Gallup study found that when people were asked what “percentage of people who have been infected by the coronavirus needed to be hospitalized,” more than a third, 35 percent, said the risk was 50 percent. It’s actually somewhere between 1 and 5 percent. As you might expect, political affiliation influences that perception. “Democrats were much more likely to overestimate the harms of COVID-19, according to the Franklin Templeton/Gallup study, with 41% believing over half of coronavirus patients would require hospitalizations, compared to 28% of Republicans.” Republicans were also more likely to correctly estimate risk.

A recent Rasmussen Reports survey also found that Democrats are more likely than Republicans to overestimate the mortality risks of COVID. According to the survey, “Democrats are significantly more likely than other Americans to overestimate the death risk from COVID-19. Twenty-eight percent (28%) of Democrats think more than 10% of people diagnosed with COVID-19 have died from the disease – more than five times the actual mortality rate. Just 14% of Republicans and the unaffiliated believe the COVID-19 mortality rate is over 10%.” The reason for this is likely tied to media consumption, as the survey found that “More viewers of Newsmax (40%) and Fox News (34%) correctly estimated the COVID-19 mortality rate than viewers of CNN (22%) or MSNBC (24%).”

So, what’s the actual mortality rate? What is your risk of dying from COVID? Well, there are a lot of factors, such as comorbidities and vaccination status, but one thing that has been very clear, even from the earliest days of the pandemic, is that this disease affects the older population more than the younger population.

So, let’s look at the chart and see what my risk is. I am 41 years old. Based on this chart, there have been 1,661 deaths from COVID among 41-year-olds—representing .041 percent of that population segment.

Of course, you might look up your age on the chart and wonder what these numbers mean in practical terms. Well, there’s a chart for that too.

According to this chart, my risk of dying from COVID is comparable to my risk of dying by drowning. Well, isn’t that interesting? Should I be afraid of the water? Should I never go swimming again? Of course not. But when you look at this chart and you look at your comparable mortality risk, it puts this pandemic in perspective, doesn’t it?

I am convinced most hospitalizations are a result of the fear the media and government has fomented. When I talk to people about going through covid, I am amazed at how many people are flabbergasted I didn’t seek medical attention, including a doctor.

Anyone who believes these numbers is a fool. Doctors and hospitals have admitted to gaming the numbers with suicides, gunshot fatalities, drownings, car crashes, etc.

Given that statistically I've been exposed to people with covid approximately 4 to 7 times in the past 14 months (close contact), including a family member living with me who tested postive...and I remained healthy throughout... I'm going to say my chances of actually dying of covid are just about zero. However, should I get taken out on my motorcycle tomorrow by a distracted soccer mom in a minivan, my chances of being reported as a covid death are just about 100%.

Even with the gamed numbers, it makes the point even stronger. IMO, including all those things STILL makes the odds comparison of dying from COVID an incredibly absurd reason to destroy an economy, the futures of our children, and the future of our country.

I agree that there should be plenty of skepticism about the numbers, but even if we accept them at face value, I believe it makes the point.

Here's my question - why aren't deaths with Covid considered deaths from Covid?

Assuming someone had a heart condition and was taken to the hospital and died from his heart condition, and was tested positive for Covid, why isn't Covid a contributing factor to his death?

Fear certainly is driving people to go to the doctor more than usual. But the number one thing driving the true hospitalizations is the lack of early treatment. If you go in symptomatic and test positive for covid, the doctors tell you to go home and don’t come back until you cannot breathe. They do not prescribe a thing, don’t even recommend vitamins.

This is criminal and why some end up in bad shape. Our absolute disregard in finding therapeutics is criminal.

Just wait for the vaccine they said. Well the vaccines are here, and like every other coronavirus vaccine that has been tried, they failed. Yet still, no push to find early treatment drugs.

It's actually less than that as most who were infected had mild to moderate symptoms, were never tested and, hence, weren't included in the calculations.

Then, of course, we have the unreliable PRC tests, with a high rate of false positives, so I guess it's a wash.

if the overall survivability is about 99.97% roughly, that makes the chances of dying less than .05% how do they get ‘between 1 and 5 %’ then?
