Frail Phil Collins begins Genesis farewell tour in Birmingham, singing from chair onstage [UK]

“Against All Odds,” Phil Collins is soldiering on.

A frail-looking Collins finished his first show with Genesis on the group’s “The Last Domino?” tour in Birmingham Monday night, remaining seated throughout the concert.

Collins, 70, sang all of the evening’s tunes from a chair onstage, though he was not alone in that regard: The group’s guitarist Mike Rutherford also opted to play while perched on a stool at points.

The Birmingham show was the first stop on the band’s farewell tour and their first live performance in 13 years since 2007’s Turn It On Again Tour.

In the latest issue of Mojo, Collins said recently that this will be the final chance to see Genesis in concert. “This English and American tour, that will be enough for me,” he said.

Cover Images Collins has struggled with his health in recent years and has been open about his physical issues heading into this tour.

Asked how he’s been prepping for months of three-hour shows, Collins told the Guardian that he hasn’t: “I don’t do anything at all,” he said. “I don’t practice singing at home, not at all. Rehearsing is the practice. These guys [his band mates] are always having a go at me for not, but I have to do it this way.”

Will he survive the tour?

I wish him well, though not a big fan. Seeing him like that really reminds one of one’s own mortality.

Definitely frail looking. His chair almost looks like a wheelchair.

I still play a couple of his songs on the bar jukebox: “One More Night,” “Taking It All Too Hard,” and “That’s All.”

In other news, Sweet Sweet Connie passed away today. I guess this is what getting old is like.

I’m a huge Genesis fan, I can’t watch it. I’ll keep the memories of the great shows from the 70s and 80s.

He’s complained of a spinal injury, that he thinks is basically repetitive stress from his posture and technique drumming.

Could be, I guess, but it looks like he’s dealing with more issues than that.

Johnny Winter was not the picture of health, even in his early days. On his last tour he played a small, out of the way spot in Gulfport FL (essentially South St Pete.) A good friend who is especially focused on guitar music went to see him and said that he was literally carried out onto the stage in the chair by some roadies. Never stood up. Talk about dying with your boots on.

Philip David Charles "Phil" Collins (born January 30, 1951) is a British singer,
songwriter, drummer, and actor who appeared in the show Miami Vice as Phil
Mayhew, a long-time con man who brings his cons to the United States in "Phil the
Shill". His song "Life Is a Rat Race" also features in the episode.

Aside from "Life Is a Rat Race", his songs "In the Air Tonight" (in "Brother's
Keeper" and "A Bullet for Crockett"), "I Don't Care Anymore" (in "No Exit"),
"Take Me Home" (in "The Prodigal Son") and "Long, Long Way to Go" (in "Sons
and Lovers") appeared in the show.

He was also a member of the band Genesis, whose song "Land of Confusion"
appeared in the episode "Freefall".

Huge Genesis fan here. I’ve seen them at least a dozen times since 1978. Suppose to go see them in December at MSG. Seeing Collins like this is sad and scary.

Fact is Collins did it to himself.

Collins has always been high strung/high maintenance. He admitted in an article 10 years ago he was contemplating suicide because he couldn’t drum like he used too. He couldn’t drum like he used to because he had an injury (back i believe) which was the result of a fall while he was drunk. He was drinking heavily because he was depressed by his third divorce. All of his marriages have ended in ruin.

Sad to see- i saw all the top bands in the 70’s; Zeppelin, Queen, Stone, Yes, ELP, Moody Blues. And without a doubt Collins was always my favorite and best front man- funny, engaging, a true entertainer and not just the singer of a rock band.

Sounds like Dusty Hill, he was propped up against the amplifier the last few shows he did with ZZ Top.
