Mountain Goat Turns Tables, Killing Grizzly Bear with Horn Puncture Wounds

“These mountain goats are big animals and those horns are very sharp,”

But what could’ve possibly taken down one of these enormous beasts? Another grizzly? Illegal poaching? Nope.

A mountain goat. Several deep puncture wounds – one beneath each armpit and one into the neck – confirm the fatal blows came from a species that is common prey to brown bears.

“Grizzly bear predation of mountain goats is relatively common, and I guess the mountain goat was successful in this instance and turned the tables on the grizzly,”

“The necropsy determined that the female grizzly bear died of natural causes, which is due to an unsuccessful predation attempt of a mountain goat,”

“So in turn the defensive response of the mountain goat would be to protect itself using its sharp horns.”

And it clearly works.

WOW! And I have been up close on accidental encounters with mountain goats! A nontechnical traverse with a blind turn, there they were!!!! We climbed to a comfortable spot above and waited.

Famous wildlife photographer and climber Galen Rowell photographed two of them climbing A 5.9 face climb. I have the book around here somewhere... Not many human climbers are going to make an exposed 5.9 move sans rope.

I saw a video of a mountain lion chasing a goat and the goat ran up and across the side of a cliff. The lion was caught up in the chase and tried to follow, only to lose footing and fall to it’s death. Amazing creatures.
